About the role

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator and Regional Manager – Southwest and Peel, the Youth Counsellor position is crucial to enabling mental health support for young people. This position is responsible for providing culturally safe and evidence‑based interventions for young people and their supports as appropriate.

* Provide an office‑based, outreach and/or telehealth individual and group counselling support service to young people, and their families (where appropriate).
* Support the Intake team in managing capacity as required through client assessment in line with organisational processes.
* Work collaboratively across internal and external services to provide integrated support for the young person.
* Refer to and maintain a thorough knowledge and network of youth resources and work in partnership when appropriate.
* Participate and support regular clinical case review and team meetings to ensure appropriate clinical service pathway and service delivery.
* Maintain records and case notes to ensure client database is kept up to date in accordance with organisational policy and guidelines.


About the practice

We are a for‑purpose organisation that creates brighter futures for young people in Western Australia by offering a range of no‑cost mental health services. Established in 1994, we deliver innovative and accessible mental health services and programs across Western Australia to help at‑risk young people aged 12 to 25. A key component of this is our role as the lead agency for a number of headspace centres including our dynamic Bunbury Office, located on Wadandi Noongar Country.


Experience and qualifications required

* Tertiary qualifications (Bachelor's or higher) in a relevant discipline, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Nursing or equivalent.
* Current membership or registration with an appropriate professional body.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with young people at risk of suicide, depression, anxiety and/or self‑harm, with an understanding of the issues that affect young people's lives.
* Demonstrated knowledge and skills in conducting risk assessments, including assessment of suicide risk, safety plans, and providing follow up support and referral for treatment as indicated.
* Knowledge and experience in the application of evidence‑based clinical practices and processes appropriate to working with young people and families experiencing complex mental health issues.
* Must possess a deep understanding and appreciation for diversity within the workforce and within our client and stakeholder base.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi‑disciplinary team.
* C Class Driver's Licence.
