Primary objective
Ensure the delivery of quality workplace programs for the Rum Jungle rehabilitation Stage 3 project including monitoring a range of metrics, revegetation and remediation projects, undertaking investigations supporting team legal compliance, and preparing quality, evidence-based reports. The Northern Territory Government (NTG), in partnership with the Commonwealth, have been developing a leading practice rehabilitation strategy for the former Rum Jungle mine site since 2009. Stage 3 of the rehabilitation project will deliver the complete construction and works program. The workplace is characterised by changing priorities, rapid turn-around times and requires considerable resilience and flexibility.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Develop, implement, and manage environmental aspects of the project, ensuring an on-site presence to provide real-time information and contribute to a safe work environment across the project in line with relevant legislation.
2. Deliver the surface and groundwater, radiation safety and environmental monitoring program.
3. Manage a small team of specialist technicians, providing support and direction to ensure project objectives are met.
4. Liaise with regulators and respond to requirements.
5. Provide technical advice, reports, presentations, and recommendations to the HSE Director, the Project Director, other government agencies and/or stakeholders.
6. Collaborate with the Community and engagement team to ensure project and stakeholder objectives are met and actively seek training, development and participation opportunities for Technicians.
7. Support the HSE Director in the delivery of broader HSE objectives.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant science, environmental management or engineering field.
2. Well-developed working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Environmental Protection Act (NT) 2019, Waste Management and Pollution Control Act (NT) and other relevant legislation and industry standards.
3. Experience in environment management, preferably in the mining or rehabilitation sector.
4. High level written and verbal communication skills including the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts and critical issues.
5. Experience in delivering results against a schedule, using a range of systems and reporting tools to manage regulatory requirements and/or established outcomes including experience in spatial database use and management.
6. Significant experience in complex problem-solving including ability to interpret information and knowledge from across a broad range of science and engineering disciplines, integrating with social requirements, using a risk-based decision-making methodology.
7. Demonstrated cross cultural awareness, understanding and knowledge, including a sound understanding of cultural sensitivities and needs in working with Aboriginal people.
