Position Description Senior Medical Officer – Hobart
Permanent Part Time | 54 Hours per Fortnight
Commencing December 2026
Work across Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital and Calvary St John's Hospital
About The Role An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to join the Medical Support team at Calvary Hobart. Based primarily at Calvary St John's Hospital, with weekend coverage at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital, the SMO provides onsite and on-call medical care across both hospital sites while supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.
Working closely with Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs), nursing teams and multidisciplinary clinicians, the SMO plays a key role in the management of medical inpatients, emergency responses and clinical governance activities. The position also provides leadership and support to the Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) workforce, including recruitment, roster management, performance reviews and ongoing professional development.
Key responsibilities
Providing medical care and clinical support across inpatient and outpatient services
Responding to Medical Emergency Team (MET) calls, Code Blue activations and other emergency responses
Assisting VMOs with ward rounds, treatment planning and patient management
Managing HMO recruitment, rostering, leave approvals and performance reviews
Supporting workforce planning and engagement of agency medical staff where required
Participating in the Medication Safety Committee and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee
Contributing to the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality clinical services across both hospital sites
What You Bring
General Medical Registration with AHPRA
Extensive clinical experience, including Emergency Medicine and Advanced Life Support
Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of independent clinical judgement
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Demonstrated leadership capability and experience supporting junior medical staff
Experience in medical workforce management, recruitment and rostering (desirable)
A commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care
