Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Neuro-symbolic AI, as part of the interdisciplinary WASP-WISE NEST project RAM³. The project aims to advance the use of recycled aluminium in high-performance applications by leveraging machine learning, computer vision, and materials science.
The successful candidate will focus on the development of neuro-symbolic models to understand and predict the behaviour of complex microstructures in recycled aluminium. The research will involve symbolic regression methods to extract interpretable symbolic information, such as mathematical functions or programs, from networks trained for material modelling. This role contributes to both advancing scientific knowledge and promoting sustainable industrial practices.
Requirements
– A Master's degree (120 credits) or a Magister degree (60 credits) in a relevant field, or for international applicants, a 4-year Bachelor's degree
– Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
– Good programming skills, preferably in Python
– Knowledge of machine learning
– Willingness to work on a cross-disciplinary project
The Following Experience Will Be Considered An Asset
– Knowledge of symbolic AI
– Experience with neuro-symbolic methods
– Understanding of applied mechanics
Responsibilities
– Conduct independent doctoral research and develop original scientific concepts
– Communicate research findings both verbally and in writing, in English
– Participate in teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of full-time employment
Contract Terms
– Fully funded PhD position, limited to four years (with the possibility to extend to five years with teaching duties)
– Starting salary: 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025)
– Physical presence required throughout the study period
– Valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date
