Primary objective
Provide expert advice and legal opinion at a senior level to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), other prosecutors and to
both internal and external stakeholders relating to the prosecution of complex criminal cases. Provide representation at the highest
level for the Crown before all courts of the Northern Territory in complex prosecutions, appeals and related matters.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert advice and legal opinion at a senior level to investigating police, the DPP and other prosecutors relating to the
prosecution of complex criminal cases.
1. Manage the carriage and conduct of complex and contested Crown prosecutions, pleas, bail hearings and preliminary
examinations, contest mentions, Local Court appeals and related proceedings in accordance with the Director's Guidelines.
1. Evaluate, screen and prepare briefs of evidence and recommend indictments in accordance with the Director's Guidelines.
2. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform and negotiate with defence counsel, victims, investigating police, court staff and the
Witness Assistance Service.
5. Provide professional advice and support to other prosecutors and promote a team environment. Act as a mentor and provide
guidance to less experienced prosecutors.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of
Australia.
2. Superior written and verbal communication skills to be able to convey concise and clear advice and opinions to the DPP, other
prosecutors, and internal and external stakeholders on complex criminal and related legal matters.
1. High level knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure.
2. High level knowledge of the DPP Prosecution Policy and Guidelines and the ability to prosecute in accordance with the same.
3. Proven experience and ability in the conduct of complex criminal trials before a jury.
4. High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and
collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general public.
1. Ability to manage a legal office in accordance with internal practices and procedures working with competing demands under
pressure.
8. Well-developed political and cross cultural awareness skills together with a sound understanding of Aboriginal issues relevant
to prosecution services.
9. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
Desirable
1. Relevant post graduate qualifications.
