Primary objective
Develop, manage and lead the dispensary pharmacy services at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals (RDPH) to ensure the delivery of
a high quality, culturally appropriate and effective service, while complying with Pharmaceutical Advantages Scheme (PBS) and legislative
requirements.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage the pharmacy dispensary services provided by Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals.
2. Line manage and coordinate the clinical pharmacist team in dispensary services and liaise with the senior technician team regarding
dispensary technician requirements.
3. Co-ordinate educational activities within dispensary services and the pharmacy department and provide professional leadership and
specialist clinical advice to medical, nursing, and other staff as appropriate.
4. Assist in the maintenance of a Pharmacy Information Management System to ensure consistency across all NT hospitals.
5. Coordinate and administer the PBS and ensure that dispensary services are provided in accordance with Pharmacy Board of Australia
guidelines, National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards, and legislative requirements.
6. Monitor the performance of and lead quality improvement activities within dispensary services.
7. Provide clinical pharmacy services when required, contribute to the weekend and on-call roster and be available for relevant
emergency duties after hours.
8. Maintain contemporary pharmacy practice knowledge through structured career development activities.
9. Take an active role in the senior pharmacy team through attendance at meetings and other activities as required.
10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
11. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or equivalent qualification in Pharmacy and registration as a pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
2. Extensive contemporary clinical pharmacy experience and demonstrated ability to maintain currency of clinical knowledge.
3. Proven capacity to coordinate and manage a hospital pharmacy dispensary service and supervise professional and technical staff.
4. Proven high level communication and interpersonal skills, including well developed negotiation and conflict management.
5. Experience in and knowledge of the administration of the pharmaceutical benefits scheme as it relates to public hospitals.
6. Experience in managing stock control, finance and budgeting for a hospital pharmacy service using computerised systems.
7. Knowledge and understanding of the principles of quality improvement and medication safety standards and how they relate to hospital
pharmacy practice.
8. Demonstrated awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture and proven experience in working effectively with patients and
families/carers of diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Postgraduate qualifications in clinical pharmacy or pharmacy management.
