About the Role
This is a Custody Notification Service (CNS) position that requires you to work as a Lawyer (Casual) in a fast-paced environment. The CNS provides a 24-hour, seven-day-per-week custody notification service for all Aboriginal people detained in a police facility in Western Australia.
You will be responsible for ensuring all telephone calls on the CNS phone line are answered on a first-call basis and referring the person to available community-based services if ongoing welfare needs are identified. You must also make referrals to emergency/crisis services at all times and liaise with police, family, and other agencies as required to explore bail options.
The successful candidate must have a high level of organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure. You must also be able to work with Aboriginal clients and employees with an appropriate level of cultural understanding, empathy, and sensitivity.
Responsibilities:
* Answer all telephone calls on the CNS phone line on a first-call basis
* Identify and address the immediate health, safety, and wellbeing needs of detained persons
* Work with police, family, and other services to ensure those welfare concerns are addressed
* Make referrals to emergency/crisis services at all times
* Liaise with police, family, and other agencies as required to explore bail options
* Enable appropriate referrals to legal services following the cessation of the CNS service
Requirements:
* Eligibility to hold a current WA Practising Certificate
* Ability to obtain a satisfactory police clearance and hold a Working with Children Check card
* High level of organisational and time management skills
* Ability to work with Aboriginal clients and employees with an appropriate level of cultural understanding, empathy, and sensitivity
* Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays
