The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency. The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. The position: The Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is seeking an experienced technical leader to join the Data Services team as the Assistant Director of Data Operations. This role is pivotal in driving the technical direction of the MDBA’s data capability and ensuring that the MDBA has access to the best data available to achieve its mission of ‘Rivers, for generations’. As the Assistant Director of Data Operations within the Data Services Section of ICT and Data Branch, you will lead a small technical team of data engineers and data analysts to build data pipelines to acquire, process, analyse and present data. The team builds solutions on an Azure Data Platform, primarily using DevOps, Databricks and PowerBI. You will draw on your ability to engage with stakeholders to understand business drivers and requirements, and with your deep knowledge of contemporary data engineering and management practices, deliver solutions that achieve MDBA outcomes. You will also contribute to leadership and coordination of work programs alongside our Data Governance and Management, and Geospatial teams. Your key responsibilities in this role are to: Lead and coordinate data analytics and operations projects in alignment with Data services strategic planning and prioritisation, including stakeholder engagement for project solution design and troubleshooting. Accountable for leading activities to promote and establish data analytics and operations initiatives. Including reporting needs, building relationships and representing the MDBA when collaborating. Responsible for determining strategic direction and workplan development of data analytics and operations activities in support of MDBA corporate and project outcomes. Provide oversight to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability of data and analysis produced by the team. Implement quality control procedures and standards including for developing maintainable, consistent and robust data pipelines and dashboards. Lead and develop MDBA data analytics and operations training initiatives, including support for the Power BI community of practice and code management systems. Oversee the maintenance and administration of data analytics and operations databases, software, and systems. Ensure the accuracy, security, integrity, and accessibility of data products by analysing and resolving issues. Manage and uplift data operations metadata capabilities including data process mapping and data catalogue services. Provide HR and line supervision to data analytics and operations staff and help navigate staff through unfamiliar circumstances. Have extensive knowledge of data analytics and operations standards, protocols. Provide advice on, develop and enforce best practices across the team. Ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Remain abreast of emerging data analytics technologies, tools, and applications and explore opportunities for innovation and improvement including Artificial Intelligence processes and methodologies.
