Our apprenticeship program has been running for more than 20 years. Unlike many companies in the electricity distribution industry, we employ our apprentices directly and we’re extremely proud that more than 98% of the apprentices we recruit complete their four-year apprenticeship program and go on to enjoy successful careers in our business.
With the transformation to a modern grid, our team members are also involved in commissioning new smart energy and automation technology to integrate distributed energy sources.

To apply, you must be completing (or have completed) Year 11 and achieved a pass in Maths or currently be completing (or have completed) a pre-apprenticeship TAFE training course in Electrotechnology (Cert II).

How to apply

Our recruitment process includes the following steps:
Online application: Click through to apply. You will need to complete some questions and attach a resume, your academic record and a cover letter. Use your cover letter to tell us about yourself and your motivation for applying.
Online assessment: This year we will only utilise numerical and mechanical reasoning, no reading or verbal. Assessments can be done on computer or phone and will take approximately 40 minutes to complete.
Video interview: The candidates will be required to record themselves answering 2 interview-style questions through an online video interview portal (this can be done with any device with a camera, including phones, laptops and tablets). This step allows us to gauge the candidate’s communication and abilities.
Face-to-face interview: If all goes well, you’ll be invited to meet us in person. Come prepared to answer a variety of questions, and please feel free to ask us any questions you may have about us, about what we do, or about our apprenticeship program. Interviews provide us with an opportunity to get to know you, as well as giving you a chance to showcase your full self and ask questions that will help you determine if our program is a good fit for you. This will also include a practical assessment.
A ‘working at heights; assessment: All candidates are required to climb a pole via a ladder and perform a simple practical task. As most of our trades are required to be able to perform work at heights, aim of this exercise is to ensure they are able to do that. Candidates will also be fitted for uniforms and PPE are this stage.
Pre-employment screening: this will include a reference check, national police check and medical assessment.

Lineworker (Certificate III in ESI - Distribution Overhead)
A day in the life of a Lineworker involves installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and some underground electrical cable lines and infrastructure. Working in teams, we use elevated work platforms and equipment to raise, replace and maintain poles, hardware and overhead powerlines. We may also install, repair and maintain street lighting systems. Importantly during weather events, our Lineworkers are the ones who respond to power outages due to powerlines affected by storm damage and ensure our community power outages are minimised.
Cable Jointer (Certificate III in ESI - Distribution Underground)
With the construction of new estates and developments installing power underground, a day in the life of a Cable Jointer involves working in teams, mostly at ground/below ground level where they install and maintain cables and conduits in underground pits and trenches and terminate cables on electrical equipment.We use specialised training, fault finding and work methods to diagnose faults on the underground network.
Substation Electrician (Certificate III in Electrotechnology)
A day in the life of a Substation Electrician involves constructing and maintaining electrical zone and ground mounted substations in teams, including finding and fixing faults with electrical plants and equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and HV switch gear and LV switchboards.
A day in the life of a Meter Technician involves travelling in a car to individual properties where they install and maintain smart meters. This can involve testing the accuracy of meters, rectification of metering faults and replacement of metering equipment. This position will allow you to enjoy working autonomously (after you have completed your apprenticeship) and regular customer interaction in your day-to-day work.

Our scholarship for women (including transgender women) and non-binary and gender diverse people undertaking a Pre-Apprenticeship TAFE Cert II in Electrotechnology course was established in 2017 to support students with a desire to enter the electrical industry and help increase the number of women enter into a career in trades.
The scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, will be awarded to students who demonstrate commitment and motivation to succeed in building a career in the electrical industry. The money can be used for costs such as school fees, tools, PPE, clothing, rent, childcare or to supplement an income whilst attending the course.
CitiPower and Powercor are committed to creating opportunities for First Peoples in the energy industry, through trade and professional career pathways. We recognise the financial barriers to undertaking study and are offering scholarships for First Peoples undertaking a Pre-Apprenticeship Cert II in Electrotechnology.
The scholarship is valued at up to $2,000 and aims to assist First Peoples with costs associated whilst undertaking study – tools, clothing, rent, childcare or to supplement an income. 2025’s scholarships have now closed, however if you would like to express your interest for 2026, please complete the expression of interest below.
