Who We Need

Are you in the early stages of your Patent Attorney career (up to 3 years post-admission) with a background in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Physics, looking to take your next step in a firm that values growth, innovation, and technical excellence?

We're seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Patent Attorney to join our high-performing Engineering ICT team in Melbourne. This is an exciting opportunity to build your expertise by working on a broad range of complex matters in a supportive environment.

You'll have direct client engagement and the chance to hone your technical skills; all while being supported by experienced mentors. Routine tasks will be handled independently to a high standard, while more complex matters will allow you to develop through hands-on learning and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Expertise

Engaging new clients

* Increasing expectation of conducting meetings with potential new clients without senior attorney presence, providing clear description of the patenting process, provide cost estimates, appropriately engage the client with retainer agreement; take instructions from clients, run conflict checks, and providing written or verbal advice as required

Preparing patent applications

* Draft patent specifications, descriptions and claims for review by senior attorney.

Prosecuting patent applications to grant

* Clearly articulate to clients the requirements and processes for obtaining patent grant, explaining objections raised by the Australian and/or international patent office(s) and providing advice and/or recommendations for overcoming said objections.
* Amending patent documents and/or preparing arguments with a view to progressing a patent application through to grant having regard to the client's commercial and strategic needs.

Advice and opinions

* Provide advice on freedom-to-operate and infringement or validity, opinions on patentability issues. In the case of complex matters, this work would be supervised.

Client relationship management

* Establish good rapport with clients by responding professionally and promptly to queries and requests.
* Take every opportunity to grow own understanding of the client's business and commercial goals.

Financial and Practice Management

* Accurately record all billable and non-billable time and manage work in progress (WIP).
* Maintain a good understanding of own progress against financial targets and actively communicate workload and capacity to supervisor and other senior members of group.
* Seeks to learn more about business drivers and effective practice management.

Marketing and Business Development

* Play a role in marketing and business development activities e.g. write articles for Griffith Hack's website, attend industry events.

Self-Development

* Lead and own professional and personal development.

About You

Qualifications & Experience

* Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline. Master's degree and PhD may be required by some practice groups.
* Masters of Intellectual Property Law.
* Registration as a Patent Attorney in Australia and New Zealand.
* Post registration experience may range from newly admitted to approximately three years.
