In supporting the Bureau to deliver impactful weather, climate, ocean and water information services, the research contributes to advancing meteorological and earth system sciences in Australia and globally. Research activities cover the broad fields of weather, climate, oceanography, earth systems modelling, data-set development, process studies, and application development. The Climate Scientist role sits within the Event Attribution team as part of the Bureau's Research Program. The Event and Trend Attribution team conducts research to improve our understanding of extreme weather and climate events, examining historical frequency, forecasting these events and creating projections of these events. They contribute to research and services with a key focus on ensuring Australians are able to adapt to current and future natural hazards and associated disasters, as part of improving national Climate and Disaster Resilience. The Climate Scientist will conduct research, both independently and under guidance, in event and trend attribution. They will devise, develop, document, run and analyse forecast experiments, analyse observational data and extremely large data sets based on output from earth system models and reanalyses using a variety of sophisticated statistical techniques. They will contribute to the delivery of research outputs and expert scientific advice for internal and external customers, including by documenting research in scientific publications and reports and presenting results at meetings and seminars.
