About the role The Second-in-Charge (2IC) position is critical for supporting the Laboratory Manager in a 24/7 laboratory within a growing trauma hospital.
This role ensures operational continuity, compliance with NATA accreditation, and leadership coverage across all shifts.
The 2IC acts as the right-hand person to the manager, providing visibility of ongoing issues, implementing solutions and maintaining momentum in a high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities: Supervise and support staff in a 24/7 roster Provide leadership coverage when the Laboratory Manager is on leave or unavailable Oversee Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance Programs (QAP) to maintain NATA accreditation compliance Train and mentor staff to improve competency and turnaround times for emergency and trauma cases Assist with operational maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments Cover bench work and shifts when required, ensuring flexibility and adaptability Monitor documentation, QC, and QAP daily to maintain audit readiness About you To be considered for this position, you will need to meet the essential requirements: Deep understanding of core laboratory disciplines: Stat Microbiology, Haematology, Blood Bank, and Biochemistry Strong knowledge of NATA accreditation requirements and compliance processes Proven experience in QC/QAP management Leadership qualities: conflict resolution, mentoring, decision-making under pressure and emotional intelligence Ability to work flexibly across a 24/7 roster when required Experience with the following instruments would be advantageous: Beckman Coulter DxC700 AU Access2 Immunoassay Analyzer Eflexis Middleware ABL90 Blood Gas Analyzer We believe everyone leads, no matter what role they are in.
