Role Overview
As a Principal AWS Migration Consultant you will lead end‑to‑end migration and modernisation programs for enterprise customers.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead comprehensive application portfolio and infrastructure assessments using AWS prescriptive guidance frameworks.
* Act as the first point of engagement with new clients, shaping project readiness and migration strategy.
* Analyze existing on‑premises and cloud architectures, network topology, security posture, and deployment processes.
* Identify gaps, risks and opportunities for migration and infrastructure modernisation across compute, storage and networking layers.
* Define an AWS migration strategy aligned with business objectives, leveraging the AWS three‑phase approach: Assess, Mobilise, and Migrate & Modernise.
* Develop detailed migration roadmaps for applications, databases and infrastructure components using the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) principles.
* Prioritise workloads for migration based on AWS assessment criteria, cost optimisation and business impact.
* Design phased migration approaches that minimise downtime and ensure compliance with security and governance standards.
* Architect and implement AWS landing zones, VPC designs and secure networking configurations following AWS best practices.
* Utilise AWS migration services such as Migration Hub, Application Migration Service, Database Migration Service and Server Migration Service.
* Apply AWS modernisation patterns including monolith decomposition, containerisation (ECS/EKS) and serverless adoption (Lambda).
* Implement event‑driven architectures, auto‑scaling and high‑availability designs to optimise performance and resilience.
* Ensure solutions adhere to the AWS Well‑Architected Framework principles for security, reliability, performance efficiency and cost optimisation.
* Oversee data centre exit strategies, workload re‑platforming and hybrid connectivity using VPN and Direct Connect.
* Establish monitoring and observability using CloudWatch, X‑Ray and third‑party tools.
* Implement disaster recovery and backup strategies leveraging services such as S3, Glacier and Backup.
* Drive automation through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using CloudFormation or Terraform.
* Lead migration teams, manage complex transformation programmes and engage stakeholders.
Technical Expertise
* Extensive hands‑on experience with AWS services, infrastructure design and migration strategies.
* Deep understanding of MAP and the AWS 7 Rs migration framework.
* Proficiency in application portfolio assessment and workload prioritisation for migration.
* Strong experience with AWS networking (VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect), compute (EC2, ECS/EKS) and storage (S3, EBS, EFS).
* Familiarity with migration tools such as Migration Hub, Application Migration Service and Database Migration Service.
* Knowledge of legacy system migration patterns, hybrid connectivity and data centre exit strategies.
* Solid programming or scripting skills (Python, Java, Node.js) for automation and migration tasks.
Architecture & Design
* Expertise in designing secure landing zones, multi‑account structures and network architectures following AWS best practices.
* Experience architecting distributed systems, microservices and event‑driven architectures aligned with the AWS Well‑Architected Framework.
* Strong understanding of modernisation patterns including containerisation, serverless adoption and database decomposition.
* Knowledge of security and compliance frameworks in AWS environments (IAM, KMS, encryption, governance).
Leadership & Communication
* Proven ability to lead migration teams, manage complex transformation programmes and engage stakeholders.
* Excellent communication skills to articulate technical strategies to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Tools & Practices
* Proficiency with IaC using CloudFormation or Terraform.
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines (CodePipeline, Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
* Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, X‑Ray).
* Exposure to AI‑powered engineering tools such as Amazon Q Developer or GitHub Copilot for automation.
* Knowledge of AWS AI/ML services (SageMaker, Bedrock) is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
* AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or AWS Certified Advanced Networking certifications.
* Background in large‑scale migration projects, portfolio transformation and hybrid/multi‑cloud environments.
* Experience implementing disaster recovery strategies, backup solutions and cost optimisation in AWS.
* Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and DevOps culture in migration contexts.
