Construction Manager, Residential Framing
Steelcraft Group | Larapinta, Brisbane QLD
$150,000 – $170,000 + superannuation + vehicle
You’ve spent years managing site operations for someone else. You know what good looks like and you know most operations fall short because nobody sets the standard and holds the line.
This role is different. You'll lead an entire installation division, owning safety, quality, delivery and commercial performance across every active site in South East Queensland. You'll build the team, set the systems, and run it as your own.
About Steelcraft Group
Steelcraft Group is one of South East Queensland’s fastest-growing residential framing companies. We design, manufacture and install steel framing for volume builders across Brisbane and surrounds. Our customers include many of Queensland’s largest and most respected home builders.
We’re in a growth phase. We’ve recently moved into an impressive A-grade facility at Larapinta with expanded production capacity and a layout built to support the next stage of the business. It’s a great working environment for the team and a strong operational base for delivering to our customers. We’re investing in the senior leadership team to match, and this role is central to that plan.
Through Steelcraft Built, we deliver framing installation, rectification and onsite support. This division exists because our builder customers want a single partner for both supply and install, and they expect the same precision and reliability on site as they get from our factory. The Construction Manager will make that promise real.
The Role
Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will take full ownership of Steelcraft Built’s installation operations. This means end-to-end accountability for site safety, workmanship quality, delivery performance and cost control across all active sites.
You will lead a team of site supervisors, a service and install coordinator, maintenance carpenters and subcontract framing crews. Your job is to build a disciplined operation that delivers the right frames to the right site on the right day, every time, without requiring constant escalation to the GM.
This is an operational leadership role, not a hands-on site position. Your base will be our Larapinta facility, with site visits as needed to inspect quality, resolve issues and to build and maintain relationships. The majority of your time will be spent on planning, coordination, performance management and continuous improvement. You will set the standards, coach your supervisors, manage subcontractor performance, foster strong builder relationships and solve root causes rather than symptoms.
You will work closely with Production, Design and Sales to ensure the whole supply chain is aligned from detailing through to handover.
What You Will Own
• Safety leadership and WHS compliance across all sites. This is non-negotiable and comes first.
• Installation delivery performance (DIFOT). Builders judge us on whether we show up when we said we would, and this needs to be consistently at or above 95%.
• Workmanship quality, inspections, rectifications and certification. Reducing rework is how you protect margin and build trust.
• Subcontractor performance, labour allocation and cost management. You build and maintain the crew bench so we always have reliable, quality teams available.
• Builder relationships at every level, from site supervisors through to construction managers and managing directors. You are Steelcraft’s face on every job, and your goal is to make us the first choice for every builder we work with.
• Root Cause Analysis on defects and delivery failures. We fix systems, not just symptoms.
What Success Looks Like
In your first 90 days:
• You’ve assessed the current state of every active site and identified where the biggest risks and improvement opportunities sit
• You’ve established a structured weekly rhythm with supervisors and the install coordinator so nothing falls through the cracks
• You’ve implemented a visible process for tracking and resolving site issues so repeat defects start declining
• The GM is already spending less time on site issues because you’ve taken genuine ownership
Ongoing, you’re measured on:
• DIFOT consistently at or above 95%. Builders can count on us.
• Fewer repeat defects and lower rectification costs quarter on quarter
• Supervisors resolving day-to-day site issues independently
• Subcontractor crews that are reliable, accountable and want to keep working with Steelcraft
• Builders choosing Steelcraft as their first-choice framing partner because of the reliability and professionalism your division delivers
About You
You’re a proven construction leader with genuine, hands-on framing knowledge. You understand load paths, bracing, tie-down, site sequencing and what it takes to get a house framed correctly, on time and to certification standard. When your team or your builders have a technical question, you’re the person they come to, and you give them the right answer with confidence.
You've built your career in residential construction and you know the industry from the ground up. Whether your background is in site supervision, construction management or a hands-on trade that led into leadership, what matters is that you've led teams, managed subcontractors and earned the trust of builders through the quality of your work.
You bring:
• Strong framing knowledge. You’ve been trained properly and can confidently lead technical conversations with detailers, production staff and installers. This is the foundation everything else is built on.
• Experience in residential construction, framing installation or site management with demonstrated leadership of teams and subcontractors
• The confidence and maturity to hold supervisors, employees and subcontractors to a clear standard, including having hard conversations when needed
• Strong commercial awareness. You understand labour costs, margins and what it takes to run a profitable operation.
• Communication skills that work with everyone, from a first-year apprentice on site through to a builder’s managing director across a boardroom table
• The ability to attract and retain quality subcontracting crews through reputation, reliability and respect
• A structured, systems-driven approach to planning and problem-solving. You prevent fires rather than fight them.
Steel framing experience is valued but not essential. What matters most is that you have deep framing knowledge, sound construction judgement and the leadership qualities described above.
Be Honest With Yourself. This Role Isn’t For Everyone.
We’d rather be upfront. Don’t apply if:
• You avoid hard conversations or hope problems resolve themselves
• You’d rather be on the tools than leading from the office. We need a leader who builds systems, not someone who hides on site.
• You operate reactively. If your management style is firefighting, this isn’t the right fit.
• You see subcontractors as disposable rather than as partners worth investing in
