Who we are
Tract is one of Australia's leading award-winning national design firms, bringing together the disciplines of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Town Planning and 3D media to create high quality design and innovation outcomes across our vast set of projects.
As planners and designers our mission is to deliver sustainable and memorable solutions, shaping places for living, leisure and work, and the infrastructure that supports and connects these places. We do this by harnessing the strength and diversity of our collective expertise.
Be part of a design-focused firm with a national footprint, working alongside talented landscape architecture and town planning professionals in a people-oriented environment.
The opportunity
Tract is seeking a passionate Urban Designer to join our established Melbourne-based team. We're looking for someone with experience delivering place-based, human-centred projects across multiple scales.
This is a chance to grow your career in a vibrant, contemporary, multi-disciplinary design studio. Our collaborative approach across disciplines fosters a dynamic work environment and enriches knowledge and skills across all aspects of our practice.
In the short term, this role will focus on new communities projects, supporting time-sensitive deliverables and masterplanning deadlines. This is a key area of growth for Tract, and the successful candidate will play an important role in shaping these future communities.
Once these immediate commitments are met, the role will evolve to include a diverse mix of project types across recreation, tourism, civic, education, health, and public realm precincts. We work with both public and private sector clients, and our team structure supports a broad program of work. While some of our team members specialise, we value versatility and consider a variety of project experience a strength of our team.
The role will involve:
* Contributing to new communities masterplans, from high-level visioning through to detailed subdivision layouts, land budgets, lot yield metrics, and planning permit documentation.
* Preparing written content for reports and submissions across both public and private sector projects.
* Supporting design development, project management, and client engagement.
* Assisting with tender bids and expressions of interest.
* Participating in strategic design projects including structure plans, urban design frameworks, built form guidelines, and public realm masterplans.
Benefits
* Mentoring – Collaborate with our national team and learn directly from industry leaders.
* Professional Development – Clear career pathways, upskilling opportunities, conference attendance, and exposure to industry committees and trends.
* Supportive Culture– People-oriented environment with a collaborative team spirit.
* Flexible Work– Hybrid work options with full support to get you set up.
* Studio Life– A convivial and creative workplace with regular social activities.
* Employee Benefits– Paid parental leave, scholarships, income protection insurance, EAP, wellbeing and mentoring programs.
* Workplace Design– A contemporary studio with sweeping city and river views, plus a lush outdoor terrace designed by our Landscape Architecture team.
* Location Perks– Ride-to-work facilities and proximity to Flinders Street Station in our prime Southbank location.
We are looking for an Urban Designer with:
* Tertiary qualification in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Planning.
* 2–4 years post-graduate experience in a similar role.
* Strong understanding of best-practice urban design in the masterplanned communities sector.
* Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and well-structured content for reports, submissions, and client communications.
* Excellent graphic and verbal communication skills.
* Proficiency in design software including CAD (MicroStation preferred but not essential) and the Adobe Suite; experience with 3D platforms (ideally Rhino) advantageous but not essential.
* Self-motivated, team-oriented, and comfortable working independently.
* Strong time management and ability to deliver outputs on time and within budget.
