Description Data Engineering Lead (Lead Engineer/Solution Engineer) – Westpac Data Platforms Sydney or Melbourne | Hybrid working In this exciting business critical role, you will play a senior, hands‑on leadership role within Westpac Data Platforms (DP) where you will be responsible for leading high‑performing data engineering teams and delivering production‑grade data solutions that support enterprise‑wide data initiatives. No two days will be the same as you will combine strong technical depth with clear delivery ownership, working closely with product owners, service owners, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable, reliable data products. Your day-to-day focus … Lead and mentor cross‑functional data engineering and analytics teams across onshore and offshore locations. Own end‑to‑end delivery of data streams, from discovery and design through build, testing, deployment, and operational support. Drive high standards of technical quality, production readiness, and release discipline. Partner with product owners and business stakeholders to define priorities, scope, and success measures. Architect and oversee data pipelines using Python, SQL, Azure Synapse, and Informatica. Ensure data quality, governance, lineage, and lifecycle management across platforms. Champion the responsible use of agentic AI to automate design, development, and testing activities. Communicate complex technical topics clearly to senior stakeholders, supporting informed decision‑making. Key ingredients for success … Extensive experience in data engineering and analytics within large, complex enterprise environments. Proven leadership of senior engineers and distributed delivery teams, fostering high performance and strong engineering standards. Strong hands-on expertise in Python, SQL, Informatica, Unix, and Control‑M, with the ability to dive deep when required. Experience delivering data solutions on Azure platforms, including Azure Synapse, within enterprise-scale architectures. Solid experience with Snowflake and Teradata in large, production environments. Strong understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and integration patterns, with the ability to design scalable and maintainable solutions. Experience with agentic AI, autonomous agents, or intelligent automation tools, and an interest in applying these capabilities to real-world data problems. Demonstrated ability to deliver production-grade solutions, underpinned by strong operational discipline and supportability. Experience engaging senior business stakeholders, translating complex requirements into clear technical outcomes. Clear communication skills, with confidence operating in governance, risk, and release forums, and experience supporting large-scale data platform modernisation initiatives. Exposure to data migration and integrated testing environments, ensuring quality and continuity during transformation programs. Experience working in regulated environments with strong data governance requirements; familiarity with Lean, Design Thinking, or scaled agile delivery frameworks is highly desirable. Why join us?
