This opportunity is with a top-tier professional services consultancy delivering cutting-edge digital and security solutions across Australia's public sector. We are seeking a Canberra-based Principal Cybersecurity Engineer for an initial 3-month contract with a strong view to extend.
This is an immediate requirement, and shortlisting will begin straight away. To be eligible, you must hold an NV1 clearance and be eligible for NV2. You'll be joining a fast-paced, technically complex program where your expertise will directly influence national security outcomes.
Your new role
As Principal Cybersecurity Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and oversight of cybersecurity architecture for defence-grade systems across networks, platforms, and on-premises environments. You'll work closely with engineering and operations teams to ensure the integrity, compliance, and resilience of secure systems aligned with Australian standards.
This role is instrumental in securing and maintaining an Authority to Operate (ATO), implementing technical controls, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with frameworks such as the ISM and ASD Essential Eight. You'll report directly to C-suite stakeholders and be the technical authority on cybersecurity architecture.
What you'll need to succeed
* Minimum 10 years of cybersecurity experience in defence, government, or critical infrastructure sectors
* CISSP certification (or equivalent), plus ASD-recognised cybersecurity credentials
* Strong expertise in Linux/Windows systems, networking security, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
* Hands-on experience with automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Packer)
* Proficiency in Java and scripting languages (Python or Ruby)
* Demonstrated ability to lead cybersecurity initiatives and influence architecture decisions
* Deep understanding of Australian cybersecurity frameworks including ISM, PSPF, and ASD Essential Eight
* Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams
