This is a 6 month fixed term, part-time (0.6 FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2026

O'Connor Primary School (PS) is a friendly school that values the support and participation of the school community. The staff are dedicated and enthusiastic in their endeavour to ensure the best outcomes possible for every student. O'Connor PS has a strong focus on Restorative Practice, student and community engagement, and wellbeing for our school community.

The school is well resourced, with many new buildings and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) integrated into classrooms. We have several purpose-built rooms for science and music that complement the general teaching classrooms. The grounds are well developed, with several areas designed for specific age groups.

O'Connor is located in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and was named after Charles Yelverton O'Connor (CYO), the Chief Engineer for Western Australia from 1891 until his death in 1902. CYO designed and, for the most part, guided the construction of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme that first brought water to Kalgoorlie in 1903, as it does today.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has a population of over and lies 600 km east of Perth. It is primarily a mining and service city. O'Connor PS was constructed in 1996 and has grown steadily to reach a population of over 700 students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The Role

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will under teacher direction, assist in the education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Education assistants will assist teachers in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional, and physical skills including the operation of computers and digital technologies. Within this role you would provide feedback when required on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education.

You should have a high level of interpersonal skills and work collaboratively with staff members to meet the needs of students. Applicants will ideally possess the knowledge and experience of working with students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties and the ability to support student growth, both academically and socially, within the classroom setting.

O'Connor PS has had an influx with English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D) students, several of whom have little or no Standard Australian English. With the assistance of Education Assistants are looking to bolster support for those students and the classrooms as they build fundamental English skills and become accustomed to school routines.

Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
