We're REA
REA Group is not your average digital business. From humble beginnings in a garage in Melbourne’s east in 1995, we have grown into a leading global digital business, specialising in property.
With bold and ambitious goals, we are changing the way the world experiences property. No matter where you're at on your property journey, we're here to help with every step - whether that's finding or financing your next home.
Our people are the key to our success. At the heart of everything we do, is a thriving culture centred around high performance and care. We are purpose driven and collaborative, which drives innovation and our ability to make a real impact. As such, we’re proud to be named #3 in Australia’s Best Workplaces 2025, extending our multi-year streak in the top 5, as well as being recognised as a Best Workplace for Women.
Where the team fits in
The role is based in the Launchpad tribe, our centralised team of Systems Engineers. You will sit in one of our squads under Launchpad, each who contribute to internal systems and tools to aid the developer journey. Your team could be responsible for networking tooling across REA, deployment across REA, or could aid the developer journey by introducing tools that allow for continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD).
What the role is all about
As a Systems Engineering summer intern, you will be exposed to various new DevOps, Cloud, Networking and Systems concepts over your 12-week placement. Our goal as Systems Engineers is to deeply understand the software engineer, anticipate their needs and build to make their lives easier. In your first few weeks, you will be introduced to the many tools that we use, and in the subsequent weeks you will pair and contribute to our existing systems. Throughout the internship, you will:
- Take time to navigate, interact with and understand various Systems Engineering tools, services and practice (AWS, GCP, Buildkite, GHE, deployment, Docker, bash scripting) using your tech mentor's support
- Contribute to our codebase to add features to our internal tools (Python, Ruby, TypeScript)
- Present your findings and learnings to our head of Launchpad on your experience as a Systems Engineer
You will have opportunity to contribute as a SysEng intern. We also provide you with a plethora of support both technically and otherwise as you navigate what will likely be a very new role for you. If you read some of the technologies above and are not familiar, do not fret. Your day-to-day involves consistent technical support so that you can finish your internship confident that you could be a great Systems Engineer.
Reporting to your squad in Launchpad, this role is all about:
- Working with infrastructure, cloud and networking services – we use AWS, GCP (mainly BigQuery), UltraDNS, Akamai, implementing and maintaining internal, developer-centric tooling using our stack and tools – Python, TypeScript, Ruby, Buildkite, ECS, GitHub, Docker
- Follow software development lifecycle (SDLC) and help automate tools to enable internal REA stakeholders and users to perform their roles
- Provide help and advice to users of those tools and services.
- Pair closely with Systems Engineers to provide quality code
Who we’re looking for
- Has a passion and curiosity to explore System Engineering fundamentals
- Has a growth mindset and is eager to be hands on.
- Is open to new technologies, ideas and is excited to explore opportunities beyond the front-end or back-end web development role
- Enjoys diversity in individuals and team dynamics and is adaptable to ways of working
- Understands our values and embodies them in their day-to-day
Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We are committed to providing a working environment that embraces and values diversity, equity and inclusion. We believe teams with diverse ideas and experiences are more creative, more effective and fuel disruptive thinking. If you've got the skills, dedication and enthusiasm to learn but don't necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch.

Keen to be part of REA but didn't find a perfect match with this opportunity? Perhaps the timing isn't right? You should join our Talent Neighbourhood!
Interview Process
The interview will be composed into 2 parts, one for values, and one technical. For the values portion, we want to know who you, what you care about and how that aligns with our REA Group Values. The technical portion will involve you bringing to us a piece of technical work that you are super proud of and sharing it with us! We aren't looking necessarily for something that is "Systems Engineer-y". We want to see your passion for tech and for you to explain to us how it works, what you were trying to achieve and how you might approach it differently next time. You don't need to bring your most complex project - show us the thing you are the proudest to have built. Live demos are great, but we'd also love for you to share your code with us.
