About the role

This recruitment process will be used to fill one full time position in Devonport and multiple part time (seasonal) positions in Devonport and Launceston.

You’ll play a crucial role in preventing damaging pests and diseases from infiltrating Tasmania's borders, safeguarding our unique environment and agricultural industries. With a primary focus on reducing biosecurity risks, our mission aligns with propelling Tasmania's agriculture sector towards a $10 billion-dollar future by 2050.

We seek individuals who are naturally inquisitive, highly attentive to detail, and decisive, with a keen ability to observe and identify the unusual.

These skills will enable you to:

* Undertake and report on biosecurity inspections, surveillance, control, and eradication activities.
* Collect data and record keep during operational activities.
* Investigate suspected non-compliance and undertake conduct of enforcement activities.
* Assist in the delivery of biosecurity and animal welfare emergency responses.

Work with supportive, down-to-earth teams and protect Tasmania’s environment, industries and way of life.

Hours per fortnight

Full time position: 73.50 hours (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Seasonal part time positions:

* October 2025 to March 2026 (on season): minimum part time hours 29 hours 24 minutes per fortnight.
* April 2026 to September 2026 (off season): minimum part time hours 7 hours 21 minutes per fortnight.


Period of appointment

12 months.


Pre-employment requirements

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

1. Conviction check in the following conviction areas:

a) Crimes of violence

b) Sex related offences

c) Serious drug offences

d) Crimes involving dishonesty

e) Serious traffic offences

f) Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation


Essential requirements

* Satisfactory security clearance as required by Port Authorities.


Desirable requirements

* The occupant of this position may be required to undertake duties contracted to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). These duties require authorisation under the Australian Government Biosecurity Act 2015, which includes a requirement for Australian citizenship. While not mandatory, Australian citizenship is considered highly desirable to ensure the occupant can perform the full range of potential duties associated with the role.
* A Certificate III or Certificate IV qualification in plant health, animal health, land management or invasive species management biosecurity emergency management or government investigations or statutory compliance relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.
