About the Role
We have a new opportunity for a
Tamping Supervisor
who will report to the Delivery Manager and Project Manager with responsibilities for planning, coordinating, and supervising tamping operations across the MTM network to ensure track geometry meets required standards for safety, performance, and compliance. The role oversees tamping crews, machine operators, and support resources, ensuring all work is delivered efficiently, safely, and in accordance with MTM engineering standards and Rail Safety National Law.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver tamping works to MTM maintenance programs, access windows, and possessions; supervise tamping to achieve correct track geometry and consolidation.
* Maintain full compliance with MTM and ONRSR requirements; lead pre-starts, safety briefings, and risk assessments, ensuring valid competencies and permits
* Verify track meets MTM standards using the Amber Trolley; monitor ballast condition, lift, alignment, slew, and cross-levels before handback.
* Supervise tamping crews and operators, providing direction, coaching, and on-site technical decisions.
* Liaise with planners, possession and network teams; manage interfaces with parallel works and complete all operational and safety reporting.
About You
* Certificate III or IV in Rail Infrastructure (Track), or equivalent experience.
* Valid RIW card with MTM network access and current driver's licence.
* Availability to work nights, weekends, and within occupation/possession timeframes.
* Strong knowledge of track geometry, ballast behaviour, tamping methods, and MTM track standards.
* Experience operating or supervising tamping machines (Jackson 6700S preferred).
* Ability to interpret track charts, geometry and fault reports.
* Proven leadership, communication, and on-site decision-making skills.
* Strong safety culture with demonstrated risk control and incident management capability.
