The Position

We are seeking to appoint a full time Lecturer or Senior Lecturer In Indigenous Health. This role will contribute to curriculum development, co-design a new experiential learning stream grounded in Indigenous pedagogies, support assessment practices, provide cultural training for staff, and pastoral care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. In addition, this position will play a key role in supporting the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students in the medical programs, working closely with the Tjabal Centre to ensure strong academic outcomes and coordinated student support. This includes regular engagement with the Tjabal Centre staff and alignment of activities between the Centre and SMP.

The Person

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will use their expertise in Indigenous health and education to support strong student learning experiences and outcomes. They will contribute to innovative teaching and assessment, promote student-centred educational practices, and lead research and supervision in areas that advance Indigenous health.

The School

The School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) was established in 2023 to bring together expertise from Medicine and Psychology to develop a unique educational and research environment. The focus is to produce psychologists, researchers, and medical graduates who practice compassion, conscience and professional excellence, and with a knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and culture. The school partners with a number of healthcare organisations to deliver teaching and training including but not limited to ACT Health, community practices throughout the ACT and Southeastern NSW.

Tjabal

The Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre (The Tjabal Centre) provides a meeting place and support base for the Indigenous students and staff at The Australian National University (ANU). The Tjabal centre provides academic support and advice, pastoral care and personal support, access to quality tuition, advice on internships and scholarships, links to ANU services, such as the health centre, careers and academic skills, outreach programs to prospective ANU students and study spaces.

SMP and The Tjabal Centre are committed to working together to support the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students in medical training programs at ANU.

The College

The ANU College of Science and Medicine encompasses the disciplines of: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environment and Society, Mathematics, Physics, and Science Communication and is also home to a number of cross-disciplinary and specialist Institutes and Centres. Staff and students within the ANU College of Science and Medicine conduct research and deliver a research-led education program that encompasses the breadth of the sciences, supported by extensive international networks and by world-class facilities.
