Two temporary full‑time opportunities (35 hours) are available until 30 June 2027 and until December 2026, based in Parramatta with hybrid working supported including 2‑3 days in the office. Salary is relative to experience, ranging from $129,464 to $142,665 plus superannuation and leave loading.

About the Role

In this fast‑paced, high‑impact role you will be at the forefront of media engagement—crafting compelling stories, building strong relationships with journalists, and enhancing the public profile of one of the largest and most significant departments in government. You will work closely with subject matter experts and senior leaders to develop accurate, timely, and engaging media materials that align with government policy and help elevate the DCCEEW and NSW Government brand.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) works to protect the state’s environment and heritage. It leads the way on climate change, driving the sustainable transition to a net‑zero economy, powered by affordable, reliable, and clean energy. DCCEEW conserves and protects the state’s natural environment, manages the NSW national park estate, and ensures sustainable management of water resources across the state to support the environment, communities and industry. We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and water and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

Qualifications

- Minimum 5 years’ experience in journalism, public relations or a similar communications role.
- Previous experience working in Government is highly desirable but not essential.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication – the ability to craft accurate, engaging, and policy‑aligned media materials including press releases, responses, talking points, FAQs, key messages, fact sheets, speeches and op‑eds.
- Media relations expertise – proven experience liaising with journalists and media outlets, managing enquiries, and coordinating responses to ensure timely and consistent messaging.
- Strategic awareness – ability to identify emerging public relations issues, monitor media trends, and provide proactive advice to executives and managers.
- Stakeholder collaboration – skilled in building strong relationships across internal business lines, subject matter experts, senior executive, ministers’ office, and external media representatives to support unified communication efforts.
- Event and issue management – experience coordinating and supervising public engagements, media events and major initiatives.
- Political and policy acumen – understanding of government priorities and the ability to align communications with departmental objectives and brand positioning.
- Crisis communication and issue mitigation – capable of advising on confidential and sensitive matters, managing reputational risks, and positioning the department effectively during high‑stakes situations.
- Organisational and systems thinking – ability to implement and improve media processes, policies, and systems to enhance responsiveness, accuracy, and impact.
- Tertiary qualifications in media, journalism or similar; or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience in media relations, including contacts with media organisations and an understanding of emergent issues impacting the client group.

Application Dates

Applications close Wednesday 10th of December 2025 at 11:55pm. The Department will be closed from Wednesday, 24 December 2025 to Sunday, 11 January 2026. During the Department closure, the Talent Acquisition Team will take annual leave, and no recruitment actions will take place. Recruitment for this position will recommence from Monday, 12 January 2026.
