Position Purpose
We are looking for Spray Painters to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis. Multiple positions available. As a Spray Painter at High St Smash, you will be responsible for preparing, painting and finishing vehicle bodies to the high standard our customers expect. You will work alongside panel-beaters, refinishers and the broader repair team in a fast-paced but quality-driven workshop.
Key Responsibilities
1. Prepare vehicle surfaces prior to painting – including sanding, masking, cleaning and ensuring correct substrate.
2. Match and mix paint colours, select appropriate materials and ensure consistency and accurate finish.
3. Apply primer, base-coat and clear-coat using spray-gun equipment, maintaining correct technique and timing.
4. Sand between coats, remove masking, polish and buff painted surfaces as required for final presentation.
5. Work with the panel-beating team to integrate repaired or replacement panels and ensure seamless finish.
6. Identify and rectify paint defects – runs, orange peel, mismatches – to deliver a flawless result.
7. Ensure adherence to manufacturer and industry repair procedures, materials and quality standards.
8. Maintain equipment, spray-booth cleanliness, storage of paint products and correct disposal of hazardous waste.
9. Work cooperatively with insurance-approved repair processes and liaise with workshop management to meet turnaround targets.
10. Uphold workplace health & safety practices, including use of PPE, ventilation systems and compliance with relevant regulations.
11. Participate in continuous improvement of repair and paint‐finishing techniques to support workshop efficiency and quality.
12. Record job details, log paint usage, maintain inventory and assist with quality checks and sign-offs.
13. Communicate effectively with the workshop team, estimators and customers when required, ensuring transparency and high service levels.
14. Mentor less experienced painters or apprentices (where applicable) to uphold team skill levels and company standards.
What We Are Looking For
1. Minimum 1 year of relevant paint/refinishing experience in an automotive body-shop environment (ideally in smash repair / insurance repair context).
2. Formal qualification relevant to the occupation – e.g. Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology (or equivalent) or a Diploma in automotive body refinishing.
3. Demonstrated skills in colour matching, spray-painting techniques and finishing work to a high standard.
4. Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship – you treat every vehicle like you owned it.
5. Ability to work efficiently under pressure, meet deadlines without compromising quality, and adapt to changing job-types (minor dents, major collisions, hail damage).
6. Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
7. Awareness of health & safety requirements in spray painting and body repair environment (use of PPE, ventilation, safe handling of chemicals).
8. Flexibility to work full-time, and willingness to assist with other tasks in the workshop as required (within reason).
9. Valid driver’s licence preferred; previous experience in an insurance-approved repair workshop is an advantage.
10. A strong commitment to delivering high quality results and customer satisfaction — you believe “done well” is the only acceptable outcome.
