Title: Scaffold / Structural Design Engineer
Location: Ballina, NSW (servicing Northern NSW & SE QLD)
Reports to: Managing Director
Ballina Scaffolding Services (BSS) is seeking an experienced Scaffold / Structural Design Engineer to take ownership of the safe, compliant and efficient design of all scaffolding structures erected by BSS. This role will suit a civil or structural engineer with a strong interest in temporary works, access solutions and practical construction engineering.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the structural design of scaffolds, temporary roofs, loading platforms and other temporary works across residential, commercial and industrial sites.
* Undertake engineering analysis and calculations to verify scaffold capacity, stability and serviceability in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and industry guidelines (e.g. AS/NZS scaffold standards and work at height requirements).
* Produce clear design drawings, sketches, calculations and design reports for internal crews and external stakeholders.
* Review and sign off scaffold designs prepared by internal draftspersons, ensuring they are buildable, safe and compliant.
* Conduct site inspections and surveys to collect design information, confirm site constraints, and verify that scaffold erection aligns with the approved design.
* Work closely with Supervisors and the Yard Manager to sequence works, confirm material requirements and resolve any on‑site design issues.
* Liaise directly with clients, builders and principal contractors to discuss design intent, load requirements and tie‑in details, and to resolve technical queries.
* Integrate WHS and safe design principles into all scaffold solutions, identifying hazards and designing out risks wherever reasonably practicable.
* Contribute to the ongoing improvement of BSS design standards, calculation templates, risk assessments and quality processes.
* Mentor and support the Scaffold Design Draftsperson and other team members, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
* Complete day dockets and other project records as required, and submit to the office by each afternoon or no later than Thursday morning each week.
WHS and Professional Conduct
* Take responsibility for ensuring designs support safe erection, use and dismantling of scaffolds in line with WHS regulations and industry best practice.
* Ensure all work complies with BSS policies, procedures and the BSS Company Induction.
* Represent BSS professionally on site and in all client interactions, maintaining and enhancing the company's reputation.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or closely related discipline).
* Demonstrated experience in scaffolding, temporary works or structural design within the construction or industrial sector.
* Proficiency with CAD drafting tools and structural analysis software (spacegas or similar)
* Strong understanding of structural mechanics, load paths and construction methodology.
* Sound knowledge of relevant WHS legislation and work‑at‑height requirements.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with site teams and clients.
