Avant Law is a national specialist law firm looking for a Legal Team Manager to join our team in Sydney, working closely with specialist Head of Practice, Paul Tsaousidis, and joining a team of purpose-driven lawyers who are passionate about defending medical practitioners. Overview
This is an opportunity for an experienced medical defence lawyer to progress their career and lead Avant Law's Professional Conduct Team. We seek an applicant with experience in managing and/or supervising medical defendant lawyers and has a genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of lawyers in this specialised area of law.
This is a full-time permanent position based out of our Sydney office with hybrid working arrangements.
Responsibilities
* Conducting own professional conduct caseload whilst managing the professional conduct team in accordance with the KPI's, ensuring targets are met and high quality legal services are provided.
* Provision and supervision of lawyers with a range of PQE experience to deliver sustainable, timely and efficient legal services in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for both the membership and the member as well as reduction in cycle times, accurate reserve and reduction in external legal costs.
* Advising and supporting the Head of Practice, Legal and as appropriate the Head of Avant Law and General Manager Professional Conduct on State legal trends, issues, reforms, significant cases and other developments relevant to the Practice Group.
* On complex claims, review and draft oral and written legal advice concerning professional conduct matters including Medicare and Professional Service Review matters; matters before the Health Care Complaints Commission; Medical Council of NSW; NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT); Aphra/Medical Board of Australia; and Coronial investigations & inquests.
* Provide complex general medico-legal advice to Avant members, as required.
* Represent members in legal proceedings, including preparing for and attending court, tribunals or inquiries and through clear and persuasive advocacy achieve the best outcome for the member.
* Coordination of resourcing and workflows within the professional conduct team and ensuring the management of claims in accordance with agreed protocols, standards and procedures of Avant Law and professional and ethical standards with documented standards and procedures consistently applied.
* Supervision, mentoring and development of the professional conduct team (lawyers and paralegals) to enable career development for staff within the Avant Law team.
Qualifications
* 10+ years' PQE, with demonstrated post admission experience in health law, specifically professional conduct related litigation.
* Relevant tertiary legal qualifications, with a current unsupervised practising certificate as a Solicitor in NSW.
* Experience in leadership or strong interest in the development of people leadership skills with proven ability to manage, mentor and support a team of lawyers.
* Demonstrated health law knowledge.
* Proactive in developing relationships and understanding and balancing member, business and team requirements.
* Excellent communication and time management skills.
