Overview
Principal Lawyer and Manager, Negligence, Litigation and Redress Unit – Ongoing, Full-time role in the Department of Education.
The NLR unit manages all litigated and non-litigated negligence claims against the department, including personal injury and property damage claims, bullying and sexual abuse claims.
It also handles the department's responses to information requests about Redress applications.
The primary responsibility is to support the management of the Legal Division and the Workplace and Education Law branch in litigation managed by the NLR unit, in accordance with the department's values and objectives.
The role requires a strategic, highly experienced litigation lawyer with a sensitive and compassionate approach given the nature of the claims and reputational risks for the department.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, project management and stakeholder management skills.
Responsibilities
Support the management of the Legal Division and Workplace and Education Law branch in litigation managed by the Negligence, Litigation and Redress (NLR) unit.
Provide strategic and practical legal advice to portfolio ministers, the secretary, senior staff and over 1,600 government schools, supporting approximately over 650,000 Victorian government school students.
Lead and contribute to litigation strategy, risk assessment and resolution of negligence claims, including personal injury, property damage, bullying and sexual abuse claims.
Manage responses to information requests about Redress applications.
Demonstrate leadership, effective communication, and stakeholder engagement to support the department's objectives and values.
Qualifications
