Design complete electrical and mechanicals for new and repair Miniature substations up to 2 MVA and 33 kV and prepare relevant documents.
Design new small and medium transformers up to 10 MVA and 33kV through calculations considering material’s characteristics and equipment.
Interpret various customer technical specifications and assist with tenders right up to design and manufacture of final product after order.
Technical interfacing with all the Internal departments, Customer base and Suppliers.
Design, analyze, interpret and maintain electrical design databases.
Make technical recommendations to improve current designs and improve the actual design process.
Train and support personnel in minisub and transformer design plus system applications.
Implementation of transformers and mini-substations design technology according to guidelines and standards to ensure that the company reaches levels of excellence in the technologies and in the quality of products.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Prepare mechanical calculation considering material’s characteristics and equipment applied in distribution, small, medium power transformers and mini-substations.
2. Optimize designs with cost calculation, considering available materials and techniques, including not moved materials on stock, taking into account customer specification.
3. Analyse, interpret and maintain complex mini-substations design databases.
4. Read and understand national and international standards applied to transformers and mini-substations design.
5. Train and support personnel in mini-substations design and system applications.
6. Make decisions, identify risks and opportunities in the design process and systems applications.
7. Provide technical information, interpret performance results on testing of transformers and mini-substations considering national and/or international standards applicable.
8. Work with customized engineering design software and advise on improvements.
9. Coordinate quality checks and inspections on products during the manufacturing process.
10. Strip & Quote mini-substations for repair, including complete inspection, assessment of the equipment conditions, check results and write failure reports.
11. Assist and give relevant information to Sales, Contract Administration, PCP, Purchasing and manufacturing areas.
12. Assist to prepare and review WTA technical standards applied in the design section.
13. Coordinate, in conjunction with the product and Quality area, the certification of the company products in South Africa.
14. Represent WTA in meetings with customers, suppliers and service providers on subjects related to product performance and after sales issues.
15. Represent WTA in Technical Committees as members in working groups in the development of standards and assessment on technical subjects related to the South African technical regulation.
Qualifications and Experience
1. Matric.
2. Electrical Engineer Qualification – B Tech Degree or Equivalent.
3. At least 5 years’ experience in miniature substation or LV boards design and transformer design.
4. At least 7 years’ post graduate experience in the electrical heavy current & high voltage industry.
5. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical calculations considering material’s characteristics and equipment applied in distribution, small, medium power transformers and mini-substations.
6. Knowledge of manufacturing process applied in distribution, small, medium power transformers and mini-substations.
7. Knowledge of testing procedures and standards requirements applied in testing of distribution, small, medium power transformers and mini-substations.
8. Experience in advanced AutoCAD (Solid Works is an advantage).
9. Computer literacy- Windows, MS Word and Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, Syspro.
10. Knowledge and ability to support the flow process between areas of the company.
11. Personnel management experience in a supervisory position during working experience.

Working Conditions
Predominantly office based. Subject to work beyond normal working hours, evenings, weekends and holidays should the need arise. Attends and participates in continuing educational programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession.
