Overview
The Design Director is responsible for the leadership of all aspects of design development, including scope definition, reference or concept designs, specifications development and client-side management of designs throughout the life of the project. The role manages the design scope by providing clear instructions to the design team and stakeholders, and retains accountability for the design outcome through delivery by monitoring construction compliance with the design intent. This role works in partnership with the Project Manager or Program Director to manage the scope of design and ensure alignment with project goals.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage all aspects of design development (scope definition, concept designs, specifications) and client-side management of designs throughout the project lifecycle.
* Provide clear instructions to the design team and stakeholders; monitor and ensure compliance with design intent during construction.
* Collaborate with Project Manager/Program Director to align design scope with project objectives and deliverables.
* Facilitate design reviews, workshops, and decision-making processes to resolve design challenges.
Qualifications
* Engineering degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent recognised under the Washington Accord.
* Registration with Engineers Australia as Chartered Professional Engineer or equivalent is desirable.
* Valid driver's licence (Class C).
* Minimum 10 years' experience in multi-disciplinary engineering design, with at least 5 years leading design teams.
* Proven ability to manage engineering delivery across diverse infrastructure projects and asset classes.
* Strong technical expertise in concept development, detailed design, and resolving complex design challenges.
* Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with experience leading meetings and workshops.
* Solid understanding of contractual, legal, commercial, and legislative requirements in engineering environments.
