Offer description

About us

The Story Island Project is a Nipaluna/Hobart-based not-for-profit organisation that nurtures the creativity and writing skills of young Tasmanians and celebrates their diverse voices. We run in-school, creative storytelling workshops where students are empowered to write their unique stories, supported by a team of enthusiastic volunteer mentors. Our vision is for young people to harness the power of their imaginations so they can grow to be resilient and creative shapers of their own lives.

Our skilled, confident Story Leader runs Story Island's trademark creative storytelling workshop programs with young people. In the workshops, young people are empowered to create their own stories. The Story Leader's role is to lead and encourage students to engage with programs' themes and resources, using these as prompts to write their own unique stories. The Story Leader is supported by a team of enthusiastic volunteer tutors who provide individualised assistance for students.

The role is 12 hours per week, worked as 2 x 6-hour days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This includes outreach work at Story Island's partner schools on workshop delivery days, with the remainder of the role based at our friendly little office, located at Kickstart Arts, Tasmania's foremost creative & cultural incubator in New Town, Hobart.

This is a 2-year part-time contract, concluding on 31 December 2027.

You'll need…

* Outstanding teaching and writing skills, and a commitment to creating quality arts literacy opportunities for marginalised young people.
* A strong commitment to child safety, and current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration.

* The ability to nurture creativity in others, and to demonstrate lived values of empathy, positivity and flexibility.
* Great organisational skills and good computer skills.
* Driver's licence

It'd be great if you also have…

* Qualifications in arts or social sciences;
* Experience working in the arts or a related NFP sector;
* Experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds.

What you'll be doing in this job…

* High-quality delivery of Story Island's programs, ensuring good student engagement in workshops, and creating an inclusive and safe environment for everyone present;
* Work with the Volunteer Coordinator and General Manager to collect and understand feedback from students, schools and volunteers, to help us improve our programs;
* Liaise with specialist artist illustrators who may co-facilitate workshops with you;
* Maintain detailed, up-to-date records of all classes, including lesson plans and student attendance; and
* When required, collaborate with the General Manager on the development of new programs and projects.

Benefits

* Four weeks pro rata paid holiday leave per annum, plus applicable public holidays;
* Superannuation at applicable legislated rates;
* Sick leave at the standard per annum allowance (pro rata); and
* Salary sacrificing available.
