The Public Service Association of NSW (PSA) represents over 40,000 members across NSW Government agencies. The PSA is the state-counterpart to the Community and Public Sector Union, NSW Branch (CPSU NSW), which represents members in state owned corporations, universities, TAFE, the disability sector, and other areas.
Legal Services is a team of employed solicitors which provides advice and representation to the PSA and the CPSU NSW, and members of these organisations, in respect of industrial and employment matters.
The PSA is looking to expand Legal Services by recruiting an additional senior solicitor who is capable of:
1. Working autonomously on industrial and employment matters, including litigation;
2. Working as part of a team on complex industrial and employment matters;
3. Providing supervision.
Essential Job Functions
The job involves:
a) Working autonomously with minimal supervision.
b) Appearing before the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW, the Fair Work Commission, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
c) Participating in file reviews of allocated matters to identify and manage risk.
d) statutory and award interpretation.
e) Maintaining up to date records on all relevant matter and assigned work.
f) Preparing internal and external briefings/communication on legal issues.
g) Providing advice.
h) adhering to obligations under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW)
i) providing legal training to internal PSA/CPSU as required.
j) Other related duties as required or directed by the Manager, Legal Services.
Preferrable capabilities
• Commitment to Union principles, the PSA Executive and Central Council
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of the State and Federal Industrial Relations systems, legislation, awards, agreements and management practices applying to PSA/CPSU NSW members
• Possess detailed knowledge of the overall structure, functions and requirements of each unit of the PSA/CPSU NSW
• Demonstrated ability to follow direction, exercise initiative and independent judgment
• Possess relevant tertiary qualifications and current NSW Practicing Certificate with over 5-7 years' experience in Industrial law
• Ability to mentor and support legal officers
• Ability to prepare and present training and information updates to PDS/CPSU NSW Industrial staff
• Strong research and analysis skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Intermediate to advanced PC skills
• Demonstrated ability to learn new computer programs and other technology
• Proven ability to prioritise and demonstrated ability to plan and manage competing demands in a timely manner
• Proven ability to develop and enhance professional competence and keep abreast of current developments in industrial relations law
• Demonstrated Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to act up as Legal Services Manager in the absence of the Manager, legal services if required
• Advanced Knowledge of the public sector, government corporations and Unions
