About the team
We currently have a permanent full‑time opportunity to join our Cultural Heritage team. This role offers the chance to work flexibly (home/office hybrid) while leading the Heritage Protection workstream charged with managing the identification and protection of heritage places for our City through our local heritage register and planning scheme.
Based within the Environment, Heritage and Resilience Department, the City Cultural Heritage team is a small and agile team known for its commitment to flexible work practices whilst delivering impactful heritage protection, conservation and compliance outcomes. This role reports to the Coordinator Heritage and is responsible for two direct reports and the delivery of the City's heritage protection responsibilities.
About your new role
As a highly experienced built heritage professional, you will apply your knowledge, skills and experience in heritage architecture and traditional construction to:
* Plan and manage the City's heritage protection work program to align with cultural heritage service priorities.
* Maintain the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register.
* Undertake heritage surveys and thematic studies to identify protection priorities and locally significant heritage places.
* Prioritise and assess places for entry onto the register against the Gold Coast register criterion and prepare statements of significance and supporting citations.
* Process public nominations and heritage places for entry onto the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register in accordance with statutory requirements.
* Maintain heritage policy provisions in the City's Planning Scheme including the heritage overlay.
* Assess minor and major development on a local heritage place and prepare conditions of approval consistent with heritage policy and code in the planning scheme.
* Manage the receipt of Local Heritage Exemption Certificate applications, and issuance of approvals for minor development on a local heritage place.
* Fulfil the role of Responsible Officer in relation to councillor and mayoral enquiries that are of a local heritage protection nature.

We're looking for people who have:
* Knowledge, skills and experience in heritage architecture, traditional construction, and the adaptive reuse of heritage places.
* Sound understanding of heritage significance assessment principles and cultural heritage and planning legislation, and its application in the role responsibilities.
* Experience in adaptive reuse and regulating development of built heritage places within a government context is desirable.
* Effective leadership skills with a supportive, collaborative and open leadership style.
* Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor your message to your audience.
* The ability to work independently and within a team environment to foster knowledge transfer and collaborative service delivery.
* Strategic thinking skills, and the ability to plan and manage programs of work in a dynamic environment within budget and time constraints.
* A bachelor's degree in architecture or heritage conservation with specialisation in built heritage.
* A current Class C Drivers licence.
