About the department and role
Victorian Power System Analysis is accountable for planning the transmission system, making network investment decisions, assessing the connection of new generators and loads in Victoria and ensuring these investments don't adversely impact the power system as a whole.
The department plays a key role in successfully navigating the energy future by determining investments and approaches that are in the best interest of consumers, and by acting as a trusted advisor for VicGrid and the Victorian Government.
The Principal Engineer provides strategic technical leadership and oversight of power system analysis supporting planning analysis, operability, and advisory services for Victoria's declared shared network. The role delivers evidence‑based insights that guide AEMO and VicGrid decisions, enabling investment and operational strategies that achieve net zero while maintaining system security and reliability.
The position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our offices in Australia – Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth & Hobart. Quarterly travel will be required if residing out of Victoria.
What you will be doing
* Provide expert technical leadership in system operability, network data, models, and limits.
* Support management in assessing system performance and ensuring resilient network operations.
* Coach and guide junior staff to deliver high‑quality network analysis and peer review.
* Manage multiple projects, identifying risks and adapting to changing priorities.
* Develop and implement clear, consistent policies and processes with stakeholders.
Monetary and people accountabilities
Lead analysis and guide junior staff, interpreting results to deliver clear recommendations and insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
What you will bring to the role
Education/Certificates
Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to power systems and at least 7 years of relevant post‑graduate experience.
Experience & Knowledge
* Extensive experience in electricity transmission network planning across all time horizons.
* Strong understanding of AEMO's Victorian Planning role, NEM operations, and relevant laws and rules.
* Skilled in network analysis and interpreting complex technical results.
* Proficient in PSS/E and PSCAD; PowerFactory experience desirable.
* Proven ability to lead work packages and manage junior staff to meet outcomes.
* Excellent communication and reporting skills, with experience engaging diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.
