About the Role
Southern Plants is looking for a motivated and reliable Maintenance Assistant to join our hands-on maintenance team at our nursery site in Dromana. In this role, you’ll work alongside our experienced Maintenance team to keep our machinery, equipment, and site infrastructure running safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Tasks
* Carry out routine maintenance and basic repairs on machinery, equipment, and facilities
* Assist with scheduled preventative maintenance activities
* Support breakdown repairs to minimise downtime
* Use hand and power tools safely and effectively
Equipment & Site Support
* Assist with maintenance of irrigation systems, potting lines, conveyors, and general site infrastructure
* Identify and report equipment faults, wear, or damage
* Support installation, relocation, and modification of equipment as directed
* Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organised condition
Safety & Compliance
* Follow all workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures and site policies
* Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times as required
* Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly
* Work safely around machinery, electrical systems, and moving equipment
Teamwork & Communication
* Follow instructions from the Maintenance Supervisor or Manager
* Work cooperatively with maintenance and production teams
* Communicate issues, delays, or concerns in a timely manner
* Maintain basic records of maintenance activities and report progress to supervisors
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
* Basic mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in maintenance work
* Ability to safely use hand and power tools
* Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions
* Awareness of workplace health and safety practices
Desirable
* Previous experience in maintenance, labouring, or a similar hands-on role
* Exposure to mechanical or electrical equipment
* Experience in nursery, horticulture, agriculture, or production environments
* Relevant trade qualification or equivalent practical experience
* Relevant licences (e.g., forklift or plant equipment)
Work Environment
* Hands-on, site-based role working with machinery and equipment
* Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
* Physical tasks including lifting and manual handling
* PPE required at all times
