Volunteer tutors are needed to assist students on Tuesdays 12:40-1:30 pm during Terms 1-4, and their work involves assisting CALD students to complete their set homework tasks in various subjects and encouraging them to continue working towards their education goals. This provides volunteer tutors with a rewarding experience within the community services and educational environment.
Volunteer tutors have the following responsibilities:
• Encouraging and supporting students with their academic studies, including help with homework, assignments and revision,
• Providing social support including mentoring and positive role modelling,
• Encouraging participants to form social connections with others in the group,
• Communicating information with enthusiasm, clarity and patience,
• Ensuring safe and appropriate use of the facilities and equipment,
• Follow confidentiality and workplace safety protocols at all times,
• Observe the progress of participants and provide assistance as required,
• Liaise with the Homework Club Co-ordinator and advise on program developments or requirements, and promptly report on any concerns.
Volunteers work closely with school-based Bi-Lingual Education Aides to appropriately support students from CALD backgrounds. The Centre for Multicultural Youth provides free training to volunteer tutors.
