Primary objective

Provide scientific information to other Fisheries Research Scientists and the Chief Scientist using data collected and collated

from field and laboratory work.

Context statement

The position is aimed at providing a recent university graduate, or early career scientist, with the opportunity to gain hands-

on experience and exposure as a Fisheries Research Scientist. The role is part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides

scientific data to support various fisheries management processes. The successful applicant will be required to occasionally

work in remote locations for periods of up to five days and be required to work on research vessels at sea.

Key duties and responsibilities

Generate scientific data during research projects through field sampling, species identification, specimen measurement and

collection; prepare collected tissues for analysis and data recording, collation and reporting; participate in project design,

implementation and analysis of results and reporting of the findings in reports and scientific publications; liaise with

stakeholders and provide assistance in the digital transformation of the Fisheries database.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Degree in fisheries science or aquatic ecology with a sound knowledge of methods for the collection and analysis of

fisheries data.

2. Proven skills and experience in planning and undertaking coordinated projects and fieldwork.

3. Demonstrated experience in the collection, analysis and presentation of fisheries resource data.

4. Technology competency including database, collaboration tools, mapping and statistical software and other

contemporary technology tool sets.

Desirable

1. Knowledge of tropical/NT Fisheries.

2. Knowledge of fisheries stock assessment techniques.

3. Current Northern Territory Driver's licence or ability to obtain one.

1. Coxswains Certificate or other relevant seamanship qualification.

implementation and analysis of results and reporting of the findings in reports and scientific publications.

outside of normal working hours.

Key duties and responsibilities

The position is required to contribute to the development, planning and implementation of research projects for NT

Fisheries. The successful applicant will require the ability to analyse and interpret research findings to provide expert

scientific opinion on resource condition and management options as required, and to present and interpret research results

to the scientific community and the pubic at conferences, seminars, public meetings, popular literature or electronic media.

Additionally, the position is responsible for the preparation of external funding applications and liaison with representatives

of funding bodies and collaborating agencies.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Degree in fisheries science or aquatic ecology with a sound knowledge of methods for the collection, analysis and

presentation of fisheries data.

2. Proven skills and experience in conceiving, designing and managing research projects on fisheries species.

1. Well-developed skills in communication and reporting of research results in both written and verbal form to both the

scientific community and the general public.

4. Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis and management of complex databases for storage and handling of

research information.

Desirable

1. Post Graduate qualification in a subject closely related to the duties of the position.

2. Understanding of and ability to undertake fishery stock assessments using state-of-the-art concepts, techniques and

computer models.

3. Experience in strategic planning and project management.

4. Coxswain's Certificate or other relevant seamanship qualification.

5. Technology competency including databases, business requirements engineering, collaboration tools, spatial mapping,

statistical software and other contemporary technology toolsets.
