Mine deputy

Launceston
Cement Australia
Posted: 16 February
Offer description

This is a rare opportunity to join the site leadership team of a unique and highly valued coal mining operation in regional Tasmania.

Cornwall Coal Company operates both underground and open-cut coal mines, along with a coal processing plant in Fingal, Northeast Tasmania. Located approximately 1.5 hours from Launceston and just 20–35 minutes from the coastal towns of St Marys and Scamander, this role offers the chance to combine career progression with an outstanding lifestyle.

Producing approximately 400,000 tonnes of coal per year, Cornwall Coal supplies the Cement Australia Railton operation and the majority of Tasmania's general coal requirements. Employing over 70 people, Cornwall Coal is a major regional employer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Cement Australia, playing a critical role in supporting Cement Australia's broader operations.

Unlike high-volume coal operations, Cornwall Coal is focused on reliability, consistency, and quality, making this an ideal environment for a safety-driven leader who values operational excellence and strong team culture.

Your Opportunity

As a Mine Deputy, you will play a critical leadership and statutory role within the underground operation at Blackwood Mine. This is a hands-on leadership position, combining statutory responsibilities with operational oversight and people leadership.

In this role, you will:

* Fulfil statutory obligations as a Mine Deputy, ensuring full compliance with legislative and safety requirements
* Lead and supervise crews of up to 10 employees, setting clear expectations and leading by example
* Take full accountability for safety, compliance, and production outcomes within your allocated work area
* Plan and coordinate production and maintenance activities to support safe, reliable coal supply
* Identify, address, and escalate non-compliances or hazards to the Undermanager as required
* Conduct thorough handovers to oncoming Deputies, ensuring continuity of safety and operational control
* Complete accurate shift reports and contribute to operational planning and improvement initiatives
* Work collaboratively with the Undermanager and fellow Deputies to achieve production, quality, cost, and resourcing targets aligned to the Mine Business Plan

At Cement Australia, Mine Deputies are trusted operational leaders — not just compliance officers — and are integral to achieving safe, efficient, and sustainable outcomes underground.

What You'll Bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

* A genuine, demonstrated commitment to safety leadership
* A Mine Deputy Certificate of Competency (essential)
* Previous underground coal mining experience (place change and extraction highly desirable)
* Strong leadership capability with the confidence to challenge unsafe behaviours
* Solid risk management and problem-solving skills
* The ability to work collaboratively and achieve results in a team-based environment

Why Join Cement Australia?

Mine Deputies are covered under the Cornwall Coal Enterprise Agreement at the Appointed Level. The role offers:

* 4-day working week (8.75 hours per day, Monday–Thursday) + additional overtime when required
* Competitive Salary & Benefits: Receive an attractive hourly rate + applicable overtime allowances
* Job Security: This is a full-time, permanent role offering reliable, ongoing work.
