About Us
Firmins Lane Services Group is a specialised on-site services provider delivering planned and unplanned outages, shutdowns, maintenance, breakdowns, and project support exclusively to the power generation, mining, and hydro industries. As an extension of Firmins Lane Engineering's established operations in the Latrobe Valley, we supply skilled teams and expertise to keep critical power assets safe, reliable, and operational across Australia.
In high-hazard power environments, safety is paramount — we're dedicated to achieving zero-harm outcomes and embedding a proactive, collaborative safety culture on every outage and project.
The Opportunity
We're expanding our national pool of proven Health & Safety Advisors for casual, contract, and outage-based work in the power generation sector.
Assignments include:
Planned and unplanned outages/shutdowns at coal-fired, hydro, or transitional power stations
Short-term project cover (2–12+ weeks), major maintenance blocks, emergency response support
Peak-period or ongoing rosters during critical asset downtime Many roles involve travel — FIFO/DIDO to Latrobe Valley sites (e.g., Loy Yang, Yallourn), regional/interstate power facilities, or remote hydro/mining-linked projects. Expect 12-hour shifts, flexible rosters (e.g., 2:1, 8:6), and the intensity of live power environments. If you're willing to travel and have strong experience in power generation outages, this offers premium casual rates, meaningful variety, and direct impact on safety in Australia's essential energy infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver hands-on, site-specific WHS advice during outages, including inspections, hazard identification, and risk controls in live/high-risk power settings
Develop/review SWMS, isolation plans, confined space/entry procedures, working at heights, electrical safety, and outage-specific safety documentation
Lead inductions, pre-start toolbox talks, and targeted training for outage crews, contractors, and power station personnel
Investigate incidents, near misses, and hazards; conduct root cause analysis and implement immediate corrective actions
Ensure strict compliance with model WHS framework, state/territory regs (e.g., WorkSafe VIC, electrical safety codes), client standards, and power industry requirements
Support injury management, return-to-work, and rehabilitation in fast-paced outage scenarios
Engage frontline workers, supervisors, and station management to promote genuine safety ownership
Maintain outage records, safety logs, and contribute to daily/weekly performance reporting and audits
Adapt swiftly to evolving outage phases, plant conditions, and emergency situations
About You
Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety (or higher, e.g., Diploma) – essential
3+ years practical experience as a WHS/H&S Advisor in power generation, outages/shutdowns, heavy industry, or high-risk environments (power station experience highly regarded)
In-depth knowledge of Australian WHS laws plus power-specific risks (e.g., high voltage, isolation/lockout-tagout, confined spaces, radiation, asbestos in legacy plants)
Proven expertise in outage risk management, incident investigation, auditing, and delivering practical training under time pressure
Strong interpersonal skills — able to influence and build trust with trades crews, contractors, and senior station personnel
Willing and able to travel Australia-wide — including FIFO/DIDO, Latrobe Valley/regional sites, interstate outages, and variable rosters
Current driver's licence; White Card; relevant tickets (e.g., Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, EWP, HV Switching desirable)
Desirable: Outage/FIFO experience in power stations, Lead Auditor qual, power industry inductions, or sector-specific certifications
Reliable, resilient, safety-driven, with a practical mindset suited to outage demands
Why Join Our Pool?
Premium rates for casual/outage work, with strong earning potential via rosters, overtime, penalties, and allowances
Comprehensive travel/site perks: flights, accommodation, meals, and outage allowances typically covered for FIFO/remote assignments
Exposure to major power generation projects, outages, and critical infrastructure across Australia
Flexibility to pick assignments that match your availability and expertise
Potential for repeat/outage-season engagements in a specialised, growing group
True commitment to safety leadership in the power sector
