Job Overview

Emergency Medicine in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting

period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment

to rebuild both Emergency Departments at William Harvey

Hospital, Ashford and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother

Hospital, Margate.

Our Emergency Departments provide innovative and fast

paced integrated emergency care to a wide range of patients

from East Kent. It is our inspiration to develop into an

academic and research unit in emergency medicine for Kent.

The Emergency Departments, one at the William Harvey

Hospital (WHH), Ashford and the other at the Queen Elizabeth

the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQMH), Margate, each offer a

full 24 hour emergency service. The Emergency Departments

are supported by co-located Urgent Treatment Centres, a 24

hour UTC at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital with a further 7

community UTCs in the region

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality care to patients including clinical

leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the ED.

To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that the Emergency Access Standards are adhered to, ensuring thatwe deliver safe, high quality care.

Patient safety, dignity and care are the highest priority and at the centre of all that we do. Whilst on duty in the department the ED consultant will provide highly visible and focussed clinical leadership - working in conjunction with the nurse in charge of the shift and the SpR/specialty doctor lead to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team maintaining optimal patient flow.

To be proactive in the Care Group’s clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of

the Trust. To liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the department to address issues arising that affect the services.

Critical Care in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment to deliver a critical care hub for Kent and Medway. A new 24-bed Intensive Care Unit is being built at the Willian Harvey Hospital, to include bespoke training facilities, including dedicated space for in-situ simulation training. This new appointment reflects the expansion in critical care.

Qualifications And Training

Essential criteria

3 years’ experience in Emergency MedicineMinimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School


Desirable criteria

Other degrees, e.g. BSc, MSc, MDExperience in ITU/Paediatrics/Medicine/AnaestheticsATLS/APLS


Skills And Experience

Essential criteria

Wide and extensive experience in all aspects of Emergency MedicineMRCEM


Desirable criteria

Special interest within or outside of Emergency Medicine


Clinical governance

Essential Criteria

Evidence of participation in or an understanding of audit, complaints management, root cause analysis/serious incident investigation, plus morbidity/mortality meetings and Structured Judgement Reviews
