Job Description

WAtoday is looking for an enthusiastic reporter who wants to take the next step in their career and join our team of skilled journalists at the Nine Publishing masthead based in Perth.

The ideal candidate will have a good contacts book and a demonstrated ability to break news stories that people across WA want to read. The role will cover a variety of rounds, including local government, courts and business.

We are looking for someone who can break news of national significance that will also be published in our sister publications, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the Brisbane Times.

The right person will also write intelligent and well-researched stories about issues such as urban sprawl, planning and design, and the Perth property market.

Day to day you will:

* Break news stories from across WA, including news from the resources industry, civil and criminal court matters, and local government.
* Write impactful and exclusive stories with national relevance, to be shared across Nine's mastheads.
* Produce in-depth coverage of urban planning issues, including topics like urban sprawl and the Perth property market.
* Deliver clean, accurate, and timely copy to meet the fast-paced demands of the newsroom.
* Maintain and develop relationships with key figures across WA’s business, politics, and development sectors to source stories.
* Write numerous stories a week for the news website, ensuring consistency in quality.

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

* Proven experience as a journalist, preferably for a major news organisation.
* Demonstrated knowledge in courts, local government, development and planning and/or property market reporting.
* Proven track record of breaking major news stories and producing well-researched, insightful content.
* A contact book that covers Perth and broader WA, including figures in planning and development and politics, will be beneficial.
* A clear, professional writing style with a demonstrated ability to produce clean, engaging copy.
* Comfortable working under tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
* Experience covering urban planning issues, including topics such as urban sprawl, design, and the property market, is highly desirable.
