About the Service

The Maitland Physiotherapy Team at Metford Hospital provides a comprehensive physiotherapy service across inpatient, outpatient and Emergency Department settings. The team supports a diverse and complex caseload, including a large inpatient population and busy orthopaedic outpatient clinics operating Monday to Thursday.

Senior graded physiotherapists provide advanced clinical expertise, leadership and oversight across service delivery, ensuring safe clinical practice, effective patient flow and strong multidisciplinary integration. The service plays a key role in supporting acute care pathways, optimising functional outcomes and maintaining efficient, responsive physiotherapy services across the hospital.

You will work within a collaborative Physiotherapy team alongside Senior Physiotherapists (Level 4 ED, ICU and Level 3 Acute Wards and Outpatients), reporting to the Level 6 Head of Discipline / Site Senior Physiotherapist.

About the Role

This position sits within the specialised Maitland Hospital Hand Therapy Service - a consultant-led, two-day-per-week outpatient service delivering targeted upper limb rehabilitation in close collaboration with the orthopaedic surgical team.

Operating as a dedicated service aligned with orthopaedic clinics and surgical pathways, you will:

* Work autonomously to assess, treat and manage a broad range of acute, post-operative and complex hand and upper limb conditions
* Provide timely, evidence-based interventions to optimise surgical and functional outcomes
* Liaise closely with orthopaedic surgeons and ward-based therapists to ensure continuity of care
* Support broader outpatient clinics as required
* Provide clinical leadership, mentoring and supervision to junior clinicians and allied health assistants

Despite its limited operating days, the Hand Therapy Service plays a critical role in supporting safe patient flow, enhancing functional recovery and delivering high-quality specialist rehabilitation within the Maitland Hospital orthopaedic service.

About You

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

* Professionalism, accountability, effective communication and a patient-centred approach
* Advanced practice physiotherapy experience, including application of advanced Hand Therapy skills across admitted and non-admitted patient groups
* Excellent verbal, non-verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
* A strong commitment to evidence-based practice, clinical excellence and continuous professional development
* Exceptional time management and prioritisation skills in a high-pressure environment
* The ability to work calmly while maintaining a high standard of patient-centred care

You will also bring demonstrated ability to:

* Provide clinical leadership
* Work autonomously
* Support, mentor and develop junior staff and allied health assistants within a multidisciplinary team

Requirements:

* Physiotherapist with current Authority to Practice with AHPRA

* The Level 6 Physiotherapist (Maitland / Kurri Kurri Hospitals) will facilitate development into this role in liaison with the Physiotherapy and Orthopaedic teams
* Structured orientation including in-person Day 1 onboarding and service-specific orientation package
* Shadowing opportunities to support understanding of clinic workflows and service delivery
* Ongoing on-site supervision
* Additional specialist supervision and professional support through the Hand Therapy Service at John Hunter Hospital
