Independent Director – Finance & Business Management Expertise
ROLE PURPOSE
This role calls for an Independent Director who is committed to engaging meaningfully and working collaboratively to ensure decisions reflect WAC's objectives while being accessible and supportive to members and stakeholders.
The Independent Director (Finance) will provide impartial oversight and strategic advice on all financial and business management matters to support Wirrawandi Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) in achieving its objectives as outlined in the WAC Rule Book and under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act **** (CATSI Act).
This includes delivering expert commercial advice, guiding agreement negotiations, and ensuring robust financial planning and sustainability for RNTBC operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide expert advice on financial management, budgeting, and business operations.
Lead strategic financial planning to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
Support the Board in interpreting financial reports, audits, and forecasts for informed decision-making.
Deliver commercial advice on business ventures, partnerships, and investment opportunities.
Assist with negotiation and review of commercial agreements to protect WAC's interests.
Build Board capacity in financial literacy and business management through training and mentoring.
Develop and implement financial policies and frameworks to strengthen accountability and transparency.
Champion responsible financial management and commercial decision-making for the benefit of Traditional Owners.
Demonstrate commitment by attending meetings regularly, reviewing Board materials, and contributing professionally.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or equivalent.
Significant experience in financial management, business operations, and commercial negotiations within RNTBCs or similar entities.
Minimum 3–5 years of board or governance experience.
Strong understanding of Corporations Act and CATSI Act financial requirements and RNTBC regulatory obligations.
High-level skills in financial analysis, strategic planning, and risk management.
Proven ability to provide commercial advice and negotiate agreements effectively.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and cultural respect.
Australian citizenship required.
