Post Graduate Fellow in Transplant Surgery

John Hunter Hospital

Fixed term temporary | Full Time | 1.0 FTE August 2026 to August 2027

Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking a dedicated and motivated Post Graduate Fellow in Transplant Surgery and Vascular Access to join our highly specialised Transplant Surgery team at John Hunter Hospital. This role offers exceptional exposure to a comprehensive transplant surgical program within one of NSW's major tertiary referral centres.

About The Role

This Fellowship provides advanced training in Renal Transplant Surgery, dialysis access surgery and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, as well as significant involvement in deceased donor organ procurement. The Fellow will work under the guidance of experienced consultant surgeons, delivering high quality patient care while undertaking a structured post-graduate training program.

This is an excellent opportunity for surgeons seeking to expand their expertise in transplant and vascular access surgery within a supportive training focused environment.

Consideration will also be given to international medical graduates who meet the requirements of the Short Term Training in a Medical Specialty (Limited Registration) Pathway.

What You'll Be Doing

Provide high quality clinical care and consultative services in Transplant Surgery and Dialysis Access Surgery. Participate in on-call rosters to support emergency and routine transplant surgical care across HNELHD. Contribute to the assessment, management and discharge planning of admitted and non-admitted patients. Perform surgical procedures aligned with training level, including transplant related operative work. Receive training in laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and deceased donor organ retrieval. Participate in teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

Essential Requirements

Current medical practitioner registered or eligible for specialist registration with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery or Urology). Recognised experience or demonstrated interest in Transplant Surgery. Demonstrated current transplant clinical practice of a high standard consistent with the role of a Post Graduate Fellow, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based practice. Applicants via the Limited Registration – Short Term Training Pathway will also be considered.
