Located in the heart of Southeast Queensland, City of Moreton Bay is one of Australia's fastest growing and most dynamic local government areas, and a key player in shaping the future of Southeast Queensland.
City of Moreton Bay is offering an exciting environment for visionary professionals who want to shape the future of a thriving, connected and sustainable city. We are seeking an experienced and strategic professional to join our Advocacy team within the External Relations Department, in a high-impact role as Lead - Government Relations.
This senior position plays a key role in managing Council's relationships with all levels of government and other key stakeholders and is focused on driving strategic advocacy outcomes that advance the city's priorities. Your deep knowledge of political environments and governments processes will be used to influence funding, policy and partnership outcomes that benefit the city.
You will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining productive relationships with Ministerial offices, State and Federal Members, senior government officials, and internal and external stakeholders.
Your ability to communicate effectively across complex political and organisational environments will be vital as you lead/contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy campaigns, prepare high-level briefings and submissions and funding proposals aligned to state and federal investment opportunities. You will also advise on sensitive political and reputational issues, often navigating competing priorities to secure the best outcomes for the city.
This role reports to the Advocacy Manager and works in close collaboration with 5 other members of the Advocacy team who focus on government relations, policy, and strategic projects advocacy, with day to day leadership of one direct report.
We are seeking candidates with strong experience in or around local government or state / federal government, ideally having worked within a local government context or in advocacy organisations with a focus on priorities related to local government. Experience from other levels of government would be a benefit for succeeding in this role, along with an appreciation of the broad, city-building topics central to this role such as infrastructure, planning, transport, accessibility, community development, 2032 Olympics and Paralympics and sustainable growth.
You will need to be a confident apolitical operator, comfortable navigating complex political environments across State and Federal levels. City of Moreton Bay spans electorates held by both major parties, so the ability to build and maintain balanced relationships is critical, as is the ability to support senior executives and elected representatives in their advocacy representations.
Success in this role requires a strategic thinker who is equally comfortable undertaking council officer tasks to do the 'groundwork', from preparing briefings and funding proposals, through to engaging with internal departments to gather data, insights, and project updates. You'll be working across the organisation to develop compelling business cases and advocacy collateral and will need to demonstrate agility to respond to a range of priorities.
To succeed in this role, tertiary qualifications in policy, political science, public relations, business, economics or a related field would be beneficial, alongside substantial experience in government relations, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement at a senior level. A current C Class Driver's Licence is also required, along with the ability to work flexibly, including some engagements outside standard business hours when needed.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a driven, politically astute and relationship-focused leader to make a real impact for Australia's third largest local government.
