Electrical Design Engineer (Contract – min 3 months)
Location: Southampton Area
Contract Length: Minimum 3 months (possibility of extension)

About the role
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join a building services and MEP (mechanical, electrical, public health) engineering consultancy on a contract basis. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, detailed electrical design outputs for a variety of building projects (commercial, institutional, mixed‑use). The role offers the chance to work in a technically driven environment where innovation, low‑carbon design, BIM and coordinated design are valued.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver electrical design from concept through to detailed design stages – including load calculations, distribution layouts, lighting design, power systems, small power, earthing/grounding, surge protection, coordination studies, etc.
* Produce and issue electrical drawings, schematics, specifications and schedules in a timely and accurate manner.
* Work within BIM workflows, coordinate with mechanical, structural and architectural disciplines to ensure fully integrated services solutions.
* Assist with tender documentation, breakdown and analysis of electrical services costs.
* Provide technical support during construction monitoring, site inspections and commissioning (if required) and liaise with contractors and project teams.
* Undertake energy modelling or part‑load studies for electrical systems, support low‑carbon or renewable technologies (e.g. EV charging infrastructure, smart grids) as required by project.
* Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards and best practice (UK/European) for electrical installations in buildings.
* Maintain high levels of documentation, quality control and deliverables meeting firm's design standards and client expectations.
Essential skills & experience
* Qualified Electrical Engineer (BEng/MEng or equivalent) with significant experience (typically 5+ years) in building services / MEP consultancy.
* Strong experience in electrical building services design within commercial/institutional projects.
* Proficiency in electrical design software tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Dialux/Relux for lighting, as‑built/documentation systems).
* Experience of working within BIM coordination frameworks and ability to interface with other disciplines.
* Knowledge of UK building services electrical regulations (BS 7671, EMC, surge protection, etc.), design standards for lighting and power, energy efficiency design.
* Strong technical drawing/drafting skills, good attention to detail, able to generate accurate drawings/specifications.
* Excellent communication skills, able to articulate design intent, coordinate with multi‑discipline teams, interface with clients/contractors.
* Self‑motivated, able to manage workload in a consultancy environment, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Desirable experience
* Experience of designing low‑carbon/renewable electrical systems (e.g., EV charging infrastructure, photovoltaic integration, smart building services).
* Experience of construction phase support or site inspections.
* Knowledge of condition/energy surveys for electrical infrastructure, or involvement in refurbishment/upgrade projects.
* Chartered status (e.g., IET, CEng) or working towards it.
