About The Role

The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer (AMHLO) is responsible for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with health related issues, accessing Mental Health Drug & Alcohol services at Barwon Health.

The AHLO team are available to all First Nations people accessing Barwon Health services to:

* Provide the client with cultural and social support
* Attend appointments or medical reviews and assist patients to understand medical information and services
* Through consultation assist other health professionals to respond in culturally appropriate ways
* Advocate for patients where required
* Provide support to the client's family
* Liaise and work effectively with community-controlled services to facilitate care planning and continuity of care
* Support discharge planning and processes

This is a special measures role and only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples are eligible to apply, as per the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

The position will be based in the Aboriginal Health Unit, located with University Hospital. The team provide support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inpatients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide culturally safe support to Aboriginal consumers, carers and families within MHDAS inpatient units and Emergency on request.
* Respond promptly to referrals from hospital staff, families, community-controlled organisations and other stakeholders.
* Deliver brief psychosocial support in collaboration with case managers and facilitate appropriate referrals to Aboriginal support services to ensure continuity of care.
* Develop and maintain strong partnerships with internal MHDAS teams and external Aboriginal and mental health service providers, including discharge coordination.
* Support MHDAS staff to deliver culturally appropriate and sensitive care to Aboriginal clients.
* Contribute to and co-facilitate cultural education and training initiatives in partnership with the Aboriginal Health Team.
* Participate in relevant forums and support service improvement initiatives, implementing agreed changes to enhance culturally responsive care.

What We're Looking For

* Relevant qualification in Mental Health, AOD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or Community Services (Certificate IV, Certificate or Diploma level).
* Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (confirmation required in line with organisational policy).
* Demonstrated experience in support and advocacy roles with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, communities and organisations.
* Sound understanding of Social and Emotional Wellbeing issues impacting Aboriginal people accessing mental health services.
* Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
