The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and our broader portfolio are integral to the Australian Government's economic agenda. Our purpose is to help the government build a better future for all Australians through enabling a productive, resilient and sustainable economy, enriched by science and technology.
We do this by:
* growing innovative and competitive businesses, industries and regions
* investing in science and technology
* supporting a strong resources sector.
The Chief Information Officer Division delivers a broad range of enabling ICT services and operational support to the department and Australian businesses, playing a key role in modernising systems and driving digital innovation across the portfolio.
We are seeking a combined skillset role of Enterprise and Solution Architect to help establish and mature enterprise architecture practices across the organisation, while also providing solution‐level architectural leadership for digital initiatives and ICT investments. This role spans enterprise‐level strategic architecture and solution‐level design and assurance. It is suitable for candidates with a background in enterprise architecture, solution architecture, or a combination of both, who can operate effectively across strategy, portfolio planning, and delivery contexts. The role works closely with business stakeholders, delivery teams, and governance bodies to ensure architecture is coherent at the enterprise level and executable at the solution level.
Key duties and responsibilities:
* Design and implement an enterprise architecture framework tailored to the department's needs.
* Develop and maintain enterprise architecture artefacts such as business capability models, target state architectures, technology roadmaps, and technical landscape overviews.
* Support and strengthen architecture governance to enable consistent, scalable, and well‐assured technology decisions.
* Translate strategic objectives, policy drivers, and investment priorities into actionable enterprise architecture guidance.
* Provide authoritative architecture advice to support portfolio planning, investment proposals, and whole‐of‐government alignment.
* Lead or assure the development of end‐to‐end solution architectures for digital and ICT initiatives, from discovery through to delivery.
* Produce and review solution architecture artefacts including high‐level designs, detailed designs, options analyses, and architectural assessments.
* Ensure solution designs align with enterprise architecture standards, security requirements, and whole‐of‐government policies.
* Work collaboratively with delivery teams, platform specialists, cyber security, and business stakeholders to design fit‐for‐purpose, sustainable solutions.
* Identify architectural risks, constraints, and dependencies and provide clear recommendations to support informed decision‐making.
* Collaborate across business and ICT to ensure architecture is understood, adopted, and applied consistently.
* Coach and support architects, delivery teams, and stakeholders in applying architecture best practices.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of architecture capability, tools, patterns, and guidance across the department.
Essential criteria
* 5+ years' experience operating as an Enterprise Architect and/or Solution Architect, ideally within Australian Government environments. Demonstrated ability to work across both enterprise‐level strategic architecture and solution‐level design and assurance.
* Proven experience developing enterprise architecture artefacts and solution architectures in complex environments. Demonstrated experience translating strategic objectives and business requirements into actionable architecture deliverables.
* Strong understanding of architecture principles, practices, and governance, and the ability to apply them pragmatically.
* Experience designing end‐to‐end solutions across application, data, integration, infrastructure/cloud, and security domains.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills across business and technical audiences.
* Deep understanding of Australian Government digital policies, architecture standards, and whole‐of‐government strategies, including alignment with Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) requirements.
