We also support ministers and stakeholders with clear, accurate financial insights that drive effective policy and program delivery.
We provide expert financial support across accounting, budgeting, tax, loans, and compliance. Our team offers tailored advice, training, and hands-on assistance to help staff manage resources effectively and meet financial obligations. We ensure public funds are used responsibly and transparently, supporting the department’s financial sustainability. By partnering with teams across the department, we help align financial practices with strategic goals and enable informed decision-making at every level.
As a member of the Financial Accounting team, you’ll help ensure the accuracy of the department’s financial records by supporting sound accounting practices and meeting legislative and policy requirements. You’ll prepare financial analysis, support statutory reporting, and represent the team in stakeholder discussions.

As an Accountant, your duties will include but are not limited to:
* assist with the month end processes, including accrual and journal reviews and monthly balance sheet reconciliation
* provide assistance with soft close and annual financial statements related notes
* assist with analysing annual stocktake results
* assist with preparing and analysing quarterly work-in-progress reviews
* representation at finance related meetings with internal and external stakeholders
* prepare monthly financial reports for submission to the Department of Finance.

* This recruitment process will initially be used to fill one ongoing (permanent) vacancy in the section.
* The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.

* a demonstrated ability to understand public sector financial frameworks, including the PGPA Act and Australian Accounting Standards
* proven experience in financial accounting processes including asset and lease accounting processes and audit coordination
* strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* excellent written and verbal communication skills
* initiative and organisational skills, including the ability to judge competing priorities and work effectively with supervision
