Overview
The Business Strategy Officer supports national coordination and continuous improvement of the Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) by analysing data and interpreting complex information to generate clear, evidence-based advice that strengthens program delivery. The role works collaboratively with stakeholders to map processes, identify risks or inefficiencies, and co-design improvements that enhance governance and national consistency. You will develop program reporting, and provide guidance and training, to support continuous improvement across the team. With training, you will also oversee and quality-assure finance and procurement activities undertaken by team members, ensuring compliance with relevant frameworks. You will lead the DWEP National Office team, including supervising an APS 5 Systems and Reporting Officer, and work closely with regional work experience teams. This is a dynamic role suited to a high-performing, self-motivated individual who is confident working independently and leading projects while remaining accountable for outcomes. You will have autonomy to manage your workload and adapt quickly to changing priorities and deadlines.
About our Team
The Youth Policy and Programs Directorate is a strategic centre for youth engagement, comprising three teams responsible for Youth Policy, Youth Pathways and the Defence Work Experience Program. Our teams adopt a One Defence approach and champion Defence's enterprise-wide vision and principles for youth engagement. This includes leading the development and implementation of engagement policies, training and education, and delivering high quality youth programs across Australia. The directorate strives to be an exemplar in delivering the Defence Work Experience Program, and is actively driving the harmonisation of other youth programs across the department. Our programs contribute to the personal and professional development of young people, preparing them for future challenges while providing exposure to the diverse career opportunities within Defence. We support national efforts to increase opportunities for priority diversity groups, including young women, First Nations participants, culturally and linguistically diverse youth, and those pursuing STEM pathways. Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is comfortable working with data and confident using it to guide decisions and strengthen program delivery. The ideal candidate will have:
* Experience collaborating to map processes, identify risks and inefficiencies, and co-design evidence-based outcomes.
* Demonstrated ability to use Excel effectively and develop Power BI dashboards that support program reporting.
* Ability to interpret policy, legislation and data to translate into clear advice for varied audiences.
* With training, oversee and quality-assure finance and procurement tasks to guide team members
* Strong engagement skills, with the confidence to provide constructive feedback, and deliver guidance or training to support continuous improvement.
