Selection Criteria
- High-level proficiency in two or more of the languages offered at VSL Distance Education
- Knowledge of pedagogical and instructional design issues related to online language teaching and learning
- Experience in the design and delivery of online and print language teaching and learning resources
- Experience in the digital and print content production process
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills producing digital content using HTML, XML and audio and image editing applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in print production including preflight.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, writing and co-ordination skills
- The ability to exercise independent judgment and solve problems in creative and productive ways
Responsibilities
1. Promote quality standards for online course design and development at the VSL
2. Liaise with teachers and other course writers to re-design print-based foreign language courses for e-learning delivery and to suit updated curriculum requirements
3. Prepare design documents, scripts, and other materials as required to support the course development process
4. Collaborate with other developers and editors as part of the production process to provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction and design of interactives
5. Structure and edit content (text, audio, image, video, interactives) for both online and print delivery using best pedagogical practice
6. Create, edit and manage files using standard office and web development software
7. Take responsibility for delivery of new blended courses from design to live / print, including testing and debugging

Location Profile
Purpose
The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a government school and state-wide service of the Department of Education and Training which provides language programs from Foundation to Year 12 (VCE) to students from all three sectors (Government, Independent, and Catholic). The school offers Languages in face-to-face and distance education classes to students who cannot study the language at their home school. The key directions are the DET Language policies and the 2015. The Education State document.

Environmental Context
- The school teaches 51 languages in 42 Centres (campuses) across Victoria. Students come from both Government and non-Government schools. Classes are held outside school hours usually on Saturdays throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area, country and regional Victoria. The VSL Centres are organised in twelve areas, each under the administration of a Leading Teacher (Area Manager) and Centre classes range from Foundation to Year 12.
- The school teachers 13 languages via distance education (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Punjabi, Spanish and Vietnamese). The levels range from Year 5 to Year 12 (VCE). The teaching is carried out through workbooks, video-conferencing, online courses and regular seminars.
- The VSL School Council, which comprises elected and nominated members, provides expert and broadly based guidance and leadership to the school.
- The school responds to Language needs of new and emerging communities and changing demands/demographics.
Role
In this position you will have a leading role in working on the development of three to four VSL Distance Education courses.
You will liaise with the writers/teachers about the teaching program and then develop, to publishing level, the online activities as well as the print resources.
This will necessarily require skill in course development, adaptation and re-writing in the project languages. Attention to detail and a thorough proofing process are crucial.
Annual reviews of courses are also undertaken. You will work as part of a small team of curriculum designers/writers/developers at the VSL Head Office.
